Keeping Truck Gear Safe in Colorado

@Pikespeak some times the best solution is the simplest solution. Even if you get broken into, most likely nobody will open your hood. A soft bag with the items you have included placed under the hood will remain out of site and un available to most even if you do get broken into. There are cut proof soft bags made for air travel with valuables that would work well and could allow you to lock it to something like an exhaust manifold or similar under hood to prevent someone taking it without opening the hood. Just another option.

Interesting, thanks for the reply, unfortunately I think I’ll have more gear than what I can it under the hood but this helps me now with smaller stuff.

Have you ever had experience with security proof bags that have Kevlar and steel mesh that make up the fabric? You must have some gangster wildlife if they are climbing up into the engine compartment and getting all hoodrat on your gear.

I don’t have experience with security proof bags that have Kevlar and steel mesh.
I’d assume they’d keep out Colorado pack rats, which I unfortunately do have a lot of experience with.

Do you know for certain, a rat couldn’t chew through such fabric?

With all your gear, and baby stuff and wife stuff and everything else you’ve got…in a small bed, maybe something like the Monster Vault gun safe would be the ticket.

You should be able to fit a dog crate and coolers on top. With a 5.5’ bed you’ll find yourself running out of room pretty quickly if you have a big dog box and many bins.

I have two drahthaars (65 and 50 lbs) and use the medium Dakota 283 kennels for them.

Good subject, let’s not ruin it with poor attitudes.
@Pikespeak you’re not wrong to be concerned but this problem isn’t as bad as it was in the past. Either way taking multiple ideas is best, minimizing what you take, don’t advertise (including any pro hunting or gun stickers), add security beyond a topper and spread things out between the cab, bed, under the hood.
