FWIW i've had Pack-rats in a few different work trucks. That were left alone in the brush all day, every day... Been around a few homemade jobbers as well and they work pretty slick. Boxes are locked, tailgates locked, crap is outta sight........ Bout as good as you are goona do IMO

Out of sight better than in sight. Locked better than open.metal better than wood or plastics. Bolted better than not.

A truck cap/topper deters most not all. Decked storage or steel tool boxes more protection than a topper.

Bars and a lock better than just a lock.

Same as anywhere else.
 
@Pikespeak some times the best solution is the simplest solution. Even if you get broken into, most likely nobody will open your hood. A soft bag with the items you have included placed under the hood will remain out of site and un available to most even if you do get broken into. There are cut proof soft bags made for air travel with valuables that would work well and could allow you to lock it to something like an exhaust manifold or similar under hood to prevent someone taking it without opening the hood. Just another option.

Visibility is the big thing. The majority of break and takes I hear about involve a vehicle with an item of value left where folks can see it.

Toppers help minimize, but don’t eliminate this. If you want to go the extra mile I’d keep everything you don’t want exposed in a Decked system. Job boxes are heavy and not super convenient, but obviously more secure in that folks will have to work a lot harder to get in.

If you can lock your tailgate, the Decked systems are fairly secure. I’d feel comfortable (relatively) leaving a firearm locked up like this.

Goes without saying, but never leave gear on your seats.

Thanks, I’m starting to mentally land where you are on this. I’m going to need decked with a topper. Now I have a bunch of questions about how difficult it is to get bins and coolers in and out of this setup. I have a kid coming so my cab is going to be full of wife, kid, and a dog which means everything will have to be in the back.

Interesting, thanks for the reply, unfortunately I think I’ll have more gear than what I can it under the hood but this helps me now with smaller stuff.
 
I’d never leave valuables under my truck, and especially under the hood!
Rats, mice, squirrels….porcupines!

5’,6’or 8’ bed truck?

Have you ever had experience with security proof bags that have Kevlar and steel mesh that make up the fabric? You must have some gangster wildlife if they are climbing up into the engine compartment and getting all hoodrat on your gear.

I don’t have experience with security proof bags that have Kevlar and steel mesh.
I’d assume they’d keep out Colorado pack rats, which I unfortunately do have a lot of experience with.

Do you know for certain, a rat couldn’t chew through such fabric?
