So, this is my first decent elk. I killed this guy on a solo 2nd season CO hunt. 2nd elk ive takin. Im just very curious if this is a good elk for a general CO tag. Im not experienced in what a big elk or decent elk is. Im from the pa, our elk are ridiculous in size and extremely managed for trophy status. Feel free to critize. I scored him at 256"

OTC 2nd season id shoot that bull all day every day. Be proud of him! The bull I shot this year on a 6 point unit may only be about 35” bigger than him so you did very well. Congrats

Any OTC 6x6 is a damn nice bull. I have one about the same size that lab aged at 4.5 years old.

Carcass tag goes on the carcass. 😜

Nice bull, especially for Colorado diy 2nd rifle.

Probably a 250-260” bull.
Hahaha I put mine on the horns too, just because I don’t care 🤣

That's a nice branch antlers bull to be taken off of public land.
He looks young, some of those old bulls and cows are pretty homely
I live in colorado and have seen a lot of elk ,living and dead
Seems like any legal bull is okay which leads to a lot of misshapen racks coming off the mountains, good job

First off, a 6 point bull in an OTC unit for someone who's taken less than a handful of elk is awesome!

Now, can we start a debate thread that's not caliber related? Lol Do antlers that are part of the animals body count as part of the carcass? And if the antlers are still attached to the body, does it make a difference? 😁

We need some new arguments around here lol

If you want to get technical; CPW states that when the carcass is in pieces the tag goes on the leg with evidence of sex. CPW does not actually classify the antlers as evidence of sex unless it is something along the lines of 5” or smaller spike being considered a cow/doe.

It also states in the regulations books to attach the tag to the carcass not to the head or antlers.

If I remember correct the last time I asked the warden about it he said it was a $175 fine for mistagged animal…. If they wanted to access a fine.

Dang... I guess there's nothing to debate and it's more cut and dry than I thought.

I've never hunted Colorado, and WY does consider antlers proof of sex.

Shouldn't get my hopes up for some entertainment without doing my homework 😆

As it's pictured, that is legally tagged. If OP cuts the head off, he'd have to move the tag to stay legal.

Edit to add - congrats @Crider89. The bull may not be "big", but that doesn't mean its not good.
