I haven't see this discussed on here yet, but John Barklow has his own website now called Knowledge from Storms. He has some videos about layering, shelters, stoves, etc. He also has a pretty good monthly newsletter. I consider John a trusted authority on backcountry survival and recreation, and I think most would find some value in his content. Obviously if he's wearing something, it's Sitka, but it doesn't feel like he's pushing products.

If I remember correctly he was a Seal and spent several years at the winter survival school house in Alaska

Below is stolen from a podcast description about him.

John Barklow is the Big Game Product Manager for Sitka, a hunting brand based in Bozeman, Montana. Prior to his current profession, he served for 26 years in the United States Navy as a Diver. His background and experience is diverse...In addition to classical dive training, he is a wealth of knowledge in climbing, skiing, backcountry travel, snow safety, and survival, to mention a few. For 15 years he worked at, and lead the Kodiak training facility where all SEAL candidates now go for their cold weather and survival training. To add icing to the cake, he has been a bowhunter for 30 years.

I spoke to him last year through Instagram because some of the Sitka is insanely smaller than advertised. He suggested to try Under Armor to me.

Irrelevant to this post. The information that Barklow generously provides for free is a fantastic resource that draws on his decades of real world experience.

Some crazy stuff he’s put himself through just to test out survival gear.

Been on John Dudleys Nockon podcast a few times

HIs info seems pretty solid.....no matter who you are there will always be 'haters'. I would encourage for each to listen themselves and determine if the info for you is: needed, relevant, beneficial.

Was he serious?
Yes, he suggested because the Sitka jackets tend to run small and I am 6'2" and 280. I normally wear a 2xl and I bought a Sitka Mtn. Jacket in 2xl. I have a 48inch chest which would put me smaller than there advertised 50-52 chest on that jacket. I got it and the arm didn't fit over my bare forearm. It was so small I am confident I would have needed a 4xl or larger. He admitted to me that some of their stuff runs smaller than advertised and suggested the UA Infil Ops Windstopper Jacket because they tend to run fuller and they also make a 3xl in that Jacket. He did say he thought the 2xl would fit me and it does.

It's absolutely relevant because it shows he has integrity and will suggest a competitors product when something in their line up doesn't work for the individual.

Barklow seems like a stand-up guy with a wealth of knowledge (which he shares for free). I have had a few interactions with him in the past talking about rain gear for specific hunts in Alaska. Barklow was very upfront about best practices/limitations for the Sitka pieces I was considering and even gave me some additional options from other brands. I'd take whatever advice he gives into consideration when it comes to survival, clothing systems, gear, etc.

Ok that makes sense. That jacket is tiny, almost by two sizes

Can 1000% endorse Barklow. The outdoor industry reeks of self-promotion and narcissism, John is a breath of fresh air. Real dude, real advice. Has answered all my random questions, and seems like he is quick and happy to help anyone.
