I view smoking just like drinking. Adults can do what they please, as long as they are responsible and not negatively affecting other people.

There are lots of things out there that when done irresponsibly can be a danger to themselves and others....driving, hunting, welding, parenting, boating. I am not small-minded enough to label any individual activity itself a problem when done legally and responsibly.

It’s pretty well know he was a huge pothead way before he got into hunting which is relatively recent. Who cares?

It’s far less dangerous than alcohol, but seems drunks are acceptable?

Not a weed advocate either, I don’t drink and may have smoked 5 times in my early 20s, never did anything for me!

I don't follow Joe Rogan, and have only listened to one or two of his podcasts. It's up to him if he wants to smoke weed, and I personally don't think that in particular hurts hunting. I'm glad someone...main stream... if that's what you want to call it, is hunting and talking about hunting in a positive light. But I have heard some remarks from him specifically about public land vs private land that I don't think are accurate, and his experiences hunting are vastly different from what 99% of us are. So I'm not sure if that isn't a bigger factor than the pot thing. Just my opinion.

OK might as well toss in my $.02 to this necro-post.

It *should* be a much bigger issue that so many hunters litter freakin' beer cans on our public lands and have alcohol involved negligent shootings every year than it is worrying about someone smoking a plant but for some reason it doesn't seem to be.

Do I have a solution for that other than for people to get their priorities straight? No I don't unfortunately.

I personally don't smoke or drink but I think our society's moral panic over pot while turning a blind eye to alcohol is pretty ridiculous.

Did you really wait 2 years to make this joke?!?

Predictable thread. From Joe Rogan to how "this generation isn't as strong as the previous ones"
Memory issues abound around these parts.

Hey I didn't bring it back!!! Don't blame me!! lol

Looks like the newbie who bumped it got disappeared so now I look like the bad guy... that's dirty. lol

RE: Memory issues, maybe the old folks have been smoking a little too much?

Finally something I have a lot of experience with. I look at alcohol and weed in the same light. If you’re abusing one or the other you have other problems. Abusing meaning drinking too much, smoking to often. They both do the same thing by releasing dopamine into your brain. Which is a the feel good chemical your brain releases to let you know your happy! After awhile your addiction is the only thing that makes you happy by releasing the dopamine.

In the interest of conversation and especially civility (no need to name call or propagandize) what are everyone's thoughts on his mix as a burgeoning public voice for hunting and his very open position on cannabis?

I like his mix of being a proponent of freedom in general. Freedom of speech. Freedom to do WTF you want with our own body. Freedom of arms and the right to hunt.

Regarding the wacky weed, it's generally a good thing in my view, even though I haven't smoked it for decades. On our recent trip to WY for antelope hunting I saw first hand what this little miracle plant can do. My buddy had pretty severe nerve pain from his amputated foot and has been on pain and sleep medicine for about 8 years. On our last day, after the hunt, we headed back to Denver. About a 1/4 mile from our airport hotel was a weed store. He wanted to try smoking some to see if it would help his pain. We paid something like $7 bucks for a joint of a specific strain, recommended for sleep and pain relief by the "Budtender". For the first time in 8 years he slept through the night without ANY pain or sleep medication. Thanks Joe, for normalizing this relatively harmless plant!

Agreed. The only negative point of view I have regarding Rogan and his pot use is hearing him talk about getting high and having conversations with his younger kids.

I don’t think he needs to hide the fact that he smokes, or be a better “ role model”, but something about that doesn’t sit well with me.

I drink at home with my kids around, but I’m not going to get shit faced in front of them.

I live in BC.

Hunters who smoke pot are not unusual. Neither are lawyers, nurses, carpenters, engineers, truck drivers, firefighters, or loggers who smoke pot.

I personally don't smoke much any more, but so long as no one gets blasted while handling firearms, I'm not fussed about it.

Get used to it. Weed prohibition is dying. Pot is only “fully illegal” in 9 states now. Most LEOs I know around me are happy not to have to bother with it in most cases anymore. State governments are seeing the tax revenue rolling in and they are all pushing for legalizing it. Just too much $ to leave it under the table.

Is it different with pot if he’s doing the same (smoking without getting shitfaced) before those talks with kids?

Not meant to be inflammatory, just curious. I have an opinion based on many years of being an ER nurse and seeing a lot of broken kids from abuse/intoxication related “accidents”. I’ve yet to see the parents in those situations (not that they don’t exist) with red eyes and a bag of Cheetos, but they do nearly universally reek of booze. Meth mouth is also common.

The free pass much of society gives to booze while taking a hard line on pot has baffled me since becoming a nurse. Not that pot is without problems, but it isn’t what keeps ER waiting room at capacity.

Yes, it’s possible to take a puff of some mild weed that will take the edge off and make you relax as a bit without the psychoactive/mental affects. Most of the people that are extremely vocal about pot want the strongest stuff available that makes them trip or “opens their minds.”

I remember being uncomfortable as a younger teenager being around drunk adults, I had never seen my dad drunk though he’d have a beer or stiff drink regularly.

I just don’t think it’s a great parenting move to be blazed out of your mind asking your 9 year old what they think would happen if you could jump through the TV and be in the places it’s showing you, then laughing hysterically.

FWIW I think pot should be legal, but I don’t think you should be going to work of driving high. Not in favor of your drunk parenting examples either. If you were legally intoxicated and something happened to your kid, I think you should be able to be charged with negligence.

Why risk an addiction? It should be used for medical purposes only in my opinion.

It’s a fact that it doesn’t contain an “addictive” chemical like nicotine or other drugs. People can and will abuse anything, look at the obesity epidemic. Nothing wrong with choosing to abstain from it, I know people that have never had a drink for fear of becoming an alcoholic. Doesn’t mean everyone else shouldn’t be able to have a beer.

Marijuana is no more addictive than going to the gym.
There are no physical withdrawls like people experience with coffee, meth, heroin, coke, or other derivatives.
You might have a tough time falling asleep for a couple days, or be a little cranky. No shakes, no dope sick, no hallucinations. Same as if a regular gym goer skips their workouts.

Pot is a mess. It’s never solved a problem, yet has caused a few. The scramble for stronger and stronger pot should tell you that it’s not a benign substance. While it might not “technically” be addictive, the growing appetite for it sure indicates an awful lot of people are looking to lose their minds in a major way.

Pot is a symptom of a much larger problem in our society.
