Jaguar re-introduction to AZ/NM

I stumbled across this today and I know its older (May 21) so I am probably missing some more up to date information but a quick seachr here didn't show me any threads.

There was a Jaguar found in NM close by where I lived in the early 2000s. Hidalgo County I believe.

This is old news, actually. Jaguars have been credibly documented in Arizona for decades.

To put it in perspective, Warner Glenn treed a large male down in the Peloncillo Mountains, back in the mid 1980's.

More recently, another large male was treed in the same region this past winter.

And that's not to mention the few that have been monitored by the Dept of Interior and AZ Game & Fish in other southern mountain ranges the past two decades.

There are several already roaming in southern Arizona. AZ/NM sits at the northern fringe of their range.

Jaguars are here and are extremely protected. They are mentioned in the Arizona hunting regulations every year. Here's a screenshot from 2021 hunting regs...

I have talked to indians in Colombia and Brazil that claim the two species occasionally breed together. I don't know if since they are different genus (Panthera and Felis) if they are different enough that it would be possible or not.

Their tracks are notably different than a cougar's tracks. And where the two species both live in South America they seem to prefer different environments and different prey. That might be different in northern Mexico and AZ and NM since those jaguars are smaller than the big ones down in South America and the cougars in AZ and NM are bigger than the ones in the Amazon and the cloud forest of the Andes. So they might be more natural competitors up here.

Google “Jaguar sightings in Santa Rita Mountains, AZ” and you can watch a trail cam video of “El Jefe” from 2016. Also some still pictures from 2013 as well as a report from 2021 from a border patrol helicopter pilot. There are a few in AZ and NM already.

@Red Letters do this one Or has he gotten better since he tried to make my dog look like a wolf?

Do jag's eat Mexican wolves? That might redefine "apex" when considering predators. I can't imagine one jag eating many more deer or elk (or angus) than a few wolves, and if the kitty eats a few dogs along the way that might be a win-win....maybe. ?
