Is There Ever a Time to Hunt with Magnum Calibers?

What evidence do you have that "most people can't shoot magnums accurately"? I hunt with 10 different hunters from time to time and over half of them shoot magnum calibers ( from ,257 Wby to .338 Win)and they are all excellent shots. I shoot a .300 Wby and have been for over 50 years and I can shoot less than moa accuracy out to 500 yards with it. Just sayin................

That’s not the same as saying people can’t be good shots with magnums. They can. I am.

That same person would have more hits on targets in field and hunting positions and scenarios with smaller calibers.

It’s interesting how many people have come from the bigger is better crowd, been apprehensive of trying something new, but tested for themselves and then added their success to the wealth of info on here and freely share their experiences to others that are interested in learning. Yet there are those that assert their own preference as necessity by being dismissive of anyone that thinks for themselves - hive mind indeed.

You told us you’ve killed coyotes with Lapua. How many did you miss?

I can’t even recall one that I’ve missed that I’ve called in, with my first shot. The last one I missed was a follow up on the second coyote with my 22CM. It is not hard to shoot a coyote at sub 200 yards seated off a bipod. My guns don’t have a ton of recoil either though.

This is the truth. I think it’s pretty simple. I shoot small guns better, I just don’t shoot the big guns bad enough to feel it is a handicap for killing a deer in the positions I will take shots in at the yardages I will take those shots at.

See. A fast moving coyote with small vitals is hard to hit for me. I hit way more than I miss, but def miss sometimes.

Oh yeah. But a running coyote and a stationary deer are very different targets. I miss moving coyotes all the time. I don’t remember the last stationary coyote I missed though. They’re all close and make for plenty big targets, whether I have a 22CM or 300 NMI

Did you wear your yoga pants for that stretch? Nobody said a magnum was a necessity, I simply gave a realistic answer to the original question of where people would use magnums. Now go cry to someone else.

100%, how i feel and I'd assume a lot of guys feel. Know your effective distance and rock on! Cartidge be secondary. I hate to jinx myself yet again, but I've never lost a big game animal with a rifle. I would venture to say, 75% have been taken with " hard recoiling rounds". The absolute key is, knowing your effective distance and ensuring you are shooting at a " field position" you are accurate or comfortable with.

Bigger is better anything else is pinko lefty thinking lol. I’m a bowhunter mostly, I can shoot my target set up with lower poundage and long stabilizers with a small pin housing more accurately than my hunting bow at 75 lbs hunting stabilizers and sights I’m confident that my 60 lb target bow has enough umph to kill an elk but I will take the mechanical advantage of my 75lb set up pushing a heavier projectile faster. I’m hunting lungs not quarter size x’s. I love my tikka 6.5 killed several deer with it, it’s accurate and I’ll hold on to that said I’m excited for my 300prc seekins element hunter I ordered. I’m confident I can shoot it well enough to kill critters at reasonable distances with practice. Nothing wrong with having more punch for when things don’t go perfect. Plus I’ve never been scared of recoil. Just like I’m not worried about a stiff draw cycle. I’m a big strong stubborn old man and it’s America do what you want.

And thank you for acknowledging my tears, I just hope someone else will be as helpful and supportive as you have been. I appreciate that you've demonstrated my point with the information and tone of your reply and commend you for being a superior marksman when shooting a cartridges with such wallop. I'm sure your game is deader and your marginal shots more lethal.
