Is My Rifle Too Much?

The range will tell you the truth. At crunch time you won’t feel anything, other than if you flinch shooting it, go with another option.

I should have stated that I'm a bow hunter and have only shot 6 or 7 deer with a rifle. Most with a 25-06 and all from a tree stand. And definitely not bragging about my jiu jitsu, I've been choked out by 120 pound women .......and didn't even pay for that!
I'm 5'7" 170 and can shoot it well enough for a few shots but it's not fun to shoot. I guess we will find out.
Being completely real, if you're already in the "not fun to shoot" zone I'd take the 308. You need to be automatic when the shot presents itself and minor unconscious flinches can make for a bad day. 308 will kill anything. My Elk rifle is a 6.5 CM.
Edit: Didn't catch that you had a 25-06, that may be the ticket if it shoots well and you're already comfortable and acclimated to it.

The blast will scare the shit out of you the first few rounds but it doesn't recoil how you think a 300WM should. My buddy has one and it was one of the first rifles i've ever shot. Then he put me behind his old 7RM Weatherby and that thing murdered my shoulder in 10 rounds. I bought a 7RM Waypoint shortly after and I have put upwards of 70 rounds through it in one day without thinking twice. They are amazing out-of-box rifles.

How much does it actually weigh?

In the heaviest config with the adjustable stock, it's probably around 10.5lbs with that NF scope, steel AI mag and ammo. Mine was right at 10lbs with a much lighter VX6, steel AI mag and ammo. Without the adjustable stock, you lose 3/4 lbs. It's really not terrible either way, especially for someone in decent physical shape.

If your guide is going to throw a fit for sub .308" choice bring what you shoot well that makes him comfortable.

I live north of the area you are heading to, and hunt elk with a .25-06 frequently. I also still use my favorite. 338WM, and in some areas a .300WM. Choice is based mostly on the area.

You need to shoot enough to know your limits, from field positions, and in the wind. Try shooting while your heart rate and breathing are elevated. Either set up will work just fine if you place the bullet in the front half. You are the limiting factor.

Thats not that bad at all. Not great but not avoid at all costs heavy like a ruger precision!

I would put a brake (even if just screw on) on it, so it is at least tolerable to shoot enough to get proficient with it and figure it out and confirm your dope chart. I have pre 64 Win Model 70 300 Win Mag that just sits in safe as modern rifles are better.
