Just got home, was out all day and covered about 7 miles. I didn't see any bears. Huge flock of turkeys taunting me (hiked with shotgun and rifle) from neighboring private. Busted a real nice 4x3 from bed.

Is snow or cold a more important factor that pushes them to hibernate ?
Or is it just when they’re burning more calories than they can take in ?

I think it is strictly food availability and the snow would tend to cover the food sources. Heard a bear biologist on Bear Hunting podcast say bears aren’t impacted by the cold.

Many bears don’t hibernate at all. They must be finding food somewhere.

All I know is every time I bring a rifle lookin for bear in Nov or Dec,,, I run into big Chukar covies and can’t do anything about it 😣

Don’t see many bears this time of year,, tho I caught one on cam 2 weeks ago about 30 min b4 dark..first bear that’s put his face in the cam and not ATE it..

It's at least not a calorie issue right now. I've never seen so many acorns on the ground everywhere I go.

Well, one week left. Anyone getting out next week? Seems to be the lowest harvest in quite a while. Any guesses as to why?

My guess is the fires.

I'm looking to go out the 28th through the 1st. Trying to decide between MNF, or have my buddy drop me off somewhere on his way to the Sierras. I only have 2WD, so I have to be careful if I go to MNF. Snow line last week was 6000' in MNF.

I wonder if the fires burned the acorns on the ground?

Well, I was upset to find out that bear season ends this Saturday in clifornia. I'll be hunting in Jackson state forest until Saturday. What a year!

Yeah I’d say the fires and lack of access to the hunting grounds . Several NF were closed for the majority of the season
