Is it legal to sell Dall sheep horns?

I noticed a few sets on e-bay and was wondering if it is legal to sell these?

I may be wrong but from my understanding, as long as they are tagged and plugged then they are legal. If they are not then they are illegal. I am still learning a lot about sheep but that is my understanding, but not 100% sure that it's the same for dall as it is for bighorns.

usually it depends on the state. I don't think Alaska allows it within the state but if its someone in the lower 48 then I think its is as long as its plugged. I know in Idaho one got seized that was from before Alaska plugged them and IDFG just plugged it and made it legal to then be sold.

Duhhhh, why didn't I think of that! I have one that was killed in 1977 that isn't plugged and was considering selling it so I will do just what you suggest. Thanks all!

Perfectly legal in Alaska, do not need to be plugged. Plugging only started in 2006. i have bought a few sets at the annual fur and horn auction. The part that is NOT legal is they must not be attached to the skull and not legal to sell a mount. There are a few ways to sell a mount, divorce or estate. But otherwise the horns must be cut from the skull. They are used in carvings, knife handles, and other crafts. I made this lamp from some I bought and a couple carvings I traded some for.

Why do people buy horns and mounts that they did not harvest?

I've purchased elk antlers for doing different stuff in our cabin.

I think it would be cool to use a sheep horn for a door handle, and if I find one I'll probably do that, but I don't think I'll be destroying any of my sheep kills/mounts, in order to do it.

I spoke to an Alaska Wildlife Trooper today about this. He informed me of the following:

1. In Alaska it is illegal to sell Dall sheep horns without a special permit. With a permit, it is allowed in certain circumstances (divorce, estates). I meant to ask him about whether or not they are still attached to the skull matters but forgot to ask him that.
2. With horns outside of Alaska they have no oversight.
3. If they felt that the set had been poached they might decide to try and confiscate them even if they were across state lines.
4. He said to be safe he would advise me calling my state game office and see if there are any regs. in my state related to this.

In short, as far as Alaska is concerned, once they are out of Alaska they are able to legally be sold. After making sure with my state game office I'm planning to see about selling the set I have to fund my next elk tag There are a few pairs for sale from taxidermy businesses that have a lot of watchers on ebay.

It does matter if they are on the skull,, a euro mount is a trophy. Here is the law....

Title 5 . Fish and Game Chapter 92 . Statewide Provisions Section 200. Purchase and sale of game

5 AAC 92.200. Purchase and sale of game


(a) In accordance with AS 16.05.920 (a) and 16.05.930(e), the purchase, sale, or barter of game or any part of game is permitted except as provided in this section.
(b) Except as provided in 5 AAC 92.031, a person may not purchase, sell, barter, advertise, or otherwise offer for sale or barter:
(1) any part of a bear, except an article of handicraft made from the fur of a bear;
(2) a big game trophy;
(3) a big game animal skull, except the skull of a wolf or wolverine, or a horn or antler that is still attached to any part of the skull;
(4) the antler of a caribou taken in Unit 23, unless the antler is a naturally shed antler or has been made into an article of handicraft;
(5) unsealed marten taken in Units 1 - 7, and 15, except as provided in 5 AAC 92.170(a) ;
(6) unsealed beaver taken in Units 1 - 11 and Units 13 - 17;
(7) unsealed land otter, lynx, wolf, or wolverine;
(8) the meat of big game and small game, except hares and rabbits; however, caribou may be bartered in Units 22 - 26, but may not be transported or exported from those units.
(c) Notwithstanding (b)(2) and (b)(3) of this section, a licensed taxidermist, estate executor, or bankruptcy referee, may sell a skin or trophy by permit issued under 5 AAC 92.031, and the state will, in its discretion, sell a skin or trophy as excess property. A person may purchase and possess an animal skin or trophy sold under this subsection. However, no person may resell a skin or trophy purchased from a seller under this subsection.
(d) A person who engages in fur dealing, as defined in AS 16.05.940 , and who purchases or acquires, through consignment or barter, the raw skin of a furbearer or fur animal, shall report the transaction to the department on a form provided for this purpose, within 30 days after the last day of the month during which the transaction occurred.

A matched set 35 or so usually brings $600 bucks or so. I go to the sale every year and have seen many sold. They are sought out and sell quick. Lots of carvers sell them even Tony Russ, his sell for some crazy prices.

In the Brooks Range some years ago, at the bottom of the drainage where I shot a ram, I found a 12-yr old 42" horn on the skull plate. Minutes later, my partner found the other horn. It was the topping on the ice cream - a great find to finish a great hunt.

A couple of days later, while packrafting out, I spotted a single sheep horn on the bottom of the creek; full curl, for sure 10+ years old.

I should've grabbed it, it would've been easy, so easy. The creek was only a foot deep. But we already had two sets, and so I gently floated on by and in seconds the opportunity was gone.

Ever since, I've regretted it - it would've made the perfect handle for the door on the sauna. But like Troutbum, there's no way I'll break up a set just to scratch that itch.

Yup, and custom Pistol Grip Makers buy them as well. Last year I "sold/traded" a set of horns from a ram I shot and had a set of custom grips made for my custom 500 Linebaugh revolver.
