Is a 6.5 PRC enough? Do I need a 7mm?

Hello Jay. I agree with your comments and know the data. By the way when I want pain I pull out my .308 Lazzeroni Warbird that on a good day pushes 180 grains at 3506 fps. My original point was if the gentleman purchased a 7 mm……like the 28 nosler he would expand opportunities with larger bullets that fight the wind better, less spin drift , less max ordinance height. I’ve shot them all effectively at 1000. But as you say the less recoil is a factor for many people. Make a bad wind call at 800 yards and 8mph you have less room for error with 28 nosler. I really enjoy my 6.5 PRC and is a tack driver. I have seen all the data and information and if folks want to use em to kill a grizzly then good luck. I will not as I have had countless experiences where I did not have the chance to make the perfect shot or perfect angle to locate the shot where a smaller caliber needed to go on big animals. You have some good points you shared here for others. Wind is the devil!

What shots and angles are those that you have actually taken and made on animals, that you believe a “smaller” caliber wouldn’t have done the same?

Just one example…a Marco Polo ram busting down hill in a windy snowstorm in Takaistan

That is what you think “smaller” callibers won’t do? Sir, you are wildly, factually so far out of reality with terminal ballistics realities.

There is no sheep in the world that a 223 with about 15 different bullets wouldn’t kill that sheep decisively.

Well in light of the original post, a 6.5 prc would handle that shot just as well as a 7mm. Personally, I wouldn’t be shooting at a running ram in a snowstorm, especially at any distance.

I think he is planning to be able to take a Texas heart shot on a rhinoceros.

He felt undergunned with a 375 against a Cape buffalo at 60 yards. An animal that is notoriously tough and nasty, but has literally been killed with bows and air rifles (penetrating to the chest cavity) and is routinely poached with a 7.62x39 or .303.

You killed one?

No question they will. I know a lady who killed one with a handgun on my trip. Have you shot a Marco Polo?

Well the 6.5 prc is only good down to -14 degrees, so ya got me there I guess.

Jack have you ever tracked a wounded animal at 16,000 elevation and -15 degrees. Dressed like the Michelin man? Knee deep snow? I have not and I don’t want to ….that was the point of the local conditions… nothing more. The terrain is very unforgiving as well.
