Is a 20 inch 6.5 PRC enough for elk?

I’m really interested in Seekins new ph3 20” 6.5 prc. I love everything about the rifle except I’m a little skeptical on how much velocity I’ll be able to achieve with factory ammo out of the 20” barrel. I’d like to be able to shoot elk within 400-500 yards. That’s really my only goal post. What do you guys think?

Yep plenty of velocity at those ranges, if you are staying in those ranges I’d look at the 6.5CM as well, you will save about 10-15 bucks per box of ammo… only about a 150-200 fps difference shooting the same bullets

Even out of a 20 inch barrel?

Let say you have a “slow” 6.5 CM 20” barrel and you only get 2,400 FPS out of a 147 ELDM (a bullet that wrecks elk down to roughly 1,600 FPS impact velocity).

You will maintain 1,800 FPS impact velocity (the number most use on Rokslide for reliable bullet upset/killing) at mid DA, out to around 600-650 yards.

So realistically the prc will only give me 100 to 200 more yards of viability?

Are you sure on those numbers? My CM is 2475 and with 143 ELDX drops under 1800 at ~520, unless I’ve been running my numbers wrong.

My 20” PRC held over 1800 out past 750 yards, however.

To the OP, it’s plenty of gun. More than enough.

You got it. That was for 1000 ft in Africa. Run it up to 6000ft and you’re correct, 1800 at 625ish yards.

On another note, you guys seem pretty knowledgeable and I have another question. What benefits do a 20” 6.5 prc have over a 20” 308?

Yesh that sounds about right. Pretty sure the 147 is something like 70 points higher on BC over the 143 as well.

Pick a bullet from each cartridge to compare first then you can talk pros and cons

But 308 has unlimited barrel life. While 6.5 PRC has a higher hit rate. But most shooters probably won't shoot the difference.

6.5 Creedmoor is what your actually looking for

The most commonly used bullets for elk. I hear a lot about the 143 eldx and 147 eldm for 6.5 prc. I don’t know much about 308 bullets though.
