Is a 20 inch 6.5 PRC enough for elk?

The most commonly used bullets for elk. I hear a lot about the 143 eldx and 147 eldm for 6.5 prc. I don’t know much about 308 bullets though.

You're getting off in the weeds a little bit. Next thing you know guys will be trying to convince you to buy a 300 Norma.

Pick a nice 6.5 whatever and shoot the piss out of it.

I’d pick a creedmoor over a prc for that, either one will kill an elk at those ranges. But you should read the 223 and 6mm threads before you buy anything. 🙂

Where can I find these threads?

OP, I have a 20" 6.5 PRC and killed a bull Nilgai with it which is considerably more difficult than an Elk. For a data point for you it does roughly 2700 FPS with both factory Hornady 147gr ELD-M and about 2720 FPS with factory 143gr Norma Bondstrike. The Nilgai was with the Bondstrike because I was shooting for bone but I'll likely fling an M at lungs if I got another change at them. For Elk no question I'd be flinging the M's, but my mountain rifle is a 6.5 Creedmoor and that's doing around 2550 FPS with the same projectiles. The only thing I like about more speed is easier wind calls.

TLDR: You're fine, do it.

On another note, you guys seem pretty knowledgeable and I have another question. What benefits do a 20” 6.5 prc have over a 20” 308?

Wife and son both previously had 308's, wife now has a 6mm ARC and son now has a 6.5 CM (my old Elk gun passed down to him). Both of their rifles were shooting 150gr stuff mostly out of the 308's which wasn't very good BC and was hardly any heavier than the 6.5 stuff. Really was zero positives to the 308 and the 308 kicks a lot harder than both of those. We don't miss the 308's at all.

So would you say in general for bullets weight is more important that diameter?

Are you sure on those numbers? My CM is 2475 and with 143 ELDX drops under 1800 at ~520, unless I’ve been running my numbers wrong.
My 16” 6creed is running 2580 factory and good to 500 with 30-50 yards to spare up according to ab and hornady. 108 eldm factory black hills. My 22” 6.5 creed is over 680 if you use the 1800 fps number

yes, but I go by higher sectional density... long for caliber bullets will have a higher ballistic coefficient and penetrate easier.
A 20in 6.5prc is enough for elk but what is the reason for the short barrel? Is this a rifle you want or one you already have? Typically a 20in bbl is chosen for those who want to run a suppressor, otherwise get a 24 or 26in bbl to really take advantage of the PRCs velocity potential.
The PRCs will have a better selection of high BC bullets than the 308.

Short answer - yes.

Longer answer- yes - you get plenty of terminal velocity and with a 20” barrel you are at the right length to suppress. My 20” tikka sees roughly 2730-2740 with factory 147 eldm. That gives me more than enough range to get what I’m after from east coast white tail to elk in the west.

6.5 PRC is probably at the upper end of the recoil range of what I’m able to spot my shots while shooting off a pack, sticks, etc. if you don’t need the extra velocity, 6.5 creed will do great with cheaper ammo, slightly longer barrel life and less recoil.

308 has its role and has been around forever. But given the choice - I wouldn’t pick it.

Also- seekins rifles are great. I’ve owned two. But I don’t see the extra expense being worth it over a stainless tikka threaded from the factory. You could be all in with scope, rings, gun, and ammo for the same price as the seekins.

How did the PRC/Accubond work on Nilgai? What shot placement did you use?

So I was planning to shoot high shoulder because I needed it to drop before getting into that nasty brush. 317 yard shot standing with a shooting stix and I ended up hitting in the lungs about 12" rear of where I wanted to. It was a Bondstrike, he went around 30ish yards and was falling over when I hit him with the second shot. Also shot one in the neck roughly 260 yards with the Bondstrike but I don't really count it because anything would've killed it with that shot placement.
