Irish goodbyes

It takes all my being every single day not to write "2 week notice" on a post it note that goes on our president's office door.
Per our handbook, in order to receive PTO payout a two-week notice is required.

Why? How many times have you seen an employer give somebody a 2 week notice?

I got a 4 week notice last time I was laid off, I worked my ass off until the last day. They also gave me a great severance package and allowed me to take interviews during them last weeks.

That being said, I’ve kept the same number for years and if someone calls with an issue I’ll reach immediately on my old projects because of how good they treated me.

Two-week notices really need to be a thing of the past. Terminations/layoffs from the employer are typically immediate. It should be a 2-way street or not at all.

One fine Monday morning in 2002 I’d just sat down for the day. Turned on my computer and began to get my tasks in order.

Soon after, I got a tap on my right shoulder. I turned around and some low level admin gal instructed me to report to HR. 15 minutes later I was sitting in my car and wondering WTF just happened.

Opened my eyes about 2 week notices and being loyal to your employer. Never trusted another company since.

I do my job and go home. 8 and skate is my mantra now.

4 more years and It’ll be Saturday every day!

I’m halfway through a notice right now. Was really expecting and hoping to be let go immediately. Oh well maybe I’ll leave two days early since I’m 1/8th Irish?

Work is extremely slow so it would only help the budget if I left. Problem is turning in a few thousand dollars of equipment properly to cover my butt so I’m at their mercy.

10 1/2 years ago, my boss was a real jerk when I took a week off to be with my wife for the birth of our first child. I really kinda half assed my job for about 3 weeks once I got back. I showed up one morning and he cussed me out, then at the end he said, “I get the feeling you don’t wanna be here anymore” I said “yea, you’re right I don’t” drove the company truck back to the shop, left my company cell phone in the cup holder and walked away.

I think not.

There is a vast difference between cutting a dozen heads at once and a 1:1 where the employee may at least maintain a small amount of dignity in an otherwise undignified situation. I have been in companies who do things like this intelligently and humanely.

So, yeah, I think there is a better way to do things like this. And, by the way, I always find it annoying that good workers must pay for the crap decisions of those in the C-Suite.

I'm the king of Irish Goodbyes in social situations. I'll just decide it's time to leave and walk out the door. I dated a girl for a while that was the Queen of Minnesota Goodbyes. My polar opposite. Not sure how it lasted as long as it did.

Done it twice. Both times I had something lined up, didn’t just unexpectedly leave. Current job I almost went full on half baked (movie, look it up) several times. Was a good growing experience to work past the situations/people but a few of them should we end up working together again I’d simply walk. Not ever working under or with someone of authority that has legitimate mental health problems, I’m not talking about disorders but full on psychological imbalance, lack of maturity and self control mood swings.

I'm going through the same thing. I am part of the leadership team and have to give 60 days notice, gave my notice and told them I was going to a competitor. Thought for sure they would walk me out, I am only 30 days in...the longest resignation ever.

I'm going through the same thing. I am part of the leadership team and have to give 60 days notice, gave my notice and told them I was going to a competitor. Thought for sure they would walk me out, I am only 30 days in...the longest resignation ever.

That’s rough. Our COO just finished a 90 day exit. Might be easier to get yourself fired.

I’ve got that beat. One fine Monday morning back in January I got a call from HR lady. She hates to do this over the phone but she isn’t coming in. My position was eliminated and I could go home. 24 years with the company and I got let go over the phone.

I still believe in giving notice, though.

Covid beliefs ushered in new management.
Gave my 1 year notice 06/23 , partner meeting 11/23 issued Irish Goodbye.
Have been without remorse since that very day!!!

I took a job as house supervisor at a hospital a couple years ago. I knew the place had issues, but they were throwing big money around and I got greedy.

Huge mistake. I made it 6 weeks. Gave report to the oncoming house supervisor on my last shift and then tossed my badge in the trash and said “Let em know I ain’t coming back to this shithole.”
