This September has been a nightmare, between my daughter being hospitalized opening weekend and work going nuts I finally got out this weekend. The original plan was to leave Thursday and hunt through today, but my main hunting partner got sick. Him and I have killed multiple rams, moose, and just about everything that walks together. We’ve scouted a bunch this summer so having him not available definitely put a damper on the weekend.

That being said his son, who I’ve known since he was 2 decided to hop on but it cut our trip short from 4 days to 2. So with this factors we decided to go hard in the paint. Hiked up Friday night and got to 350 on a billy, then passed him as he just wasn’t what we’re looking for. Saturday morning we started out glassing up a billy but couldn’t get a great look at him before he went over the ridge. So we hauled ass around the ridge and caught him 3 miles up the other side. After a closer look we let him walk, went up to the next basin and found the biggest nanny I have ever seen with 4 kids and sub adults. We let her walk, finished up our 5 mile loop.

We headed out to call the wife and then went up and over 2 basins that night, but only found nannies and kids.

Yesterday morning, we went for an “easy” walk to check a basin as we were already on mile 22 for the weekend. At 2 miles in I glassed a billy up 1.5 miles away and 1400 feet up. A smart man would’ve just walked back to the truck and went to kill him this weekend. I am not a smart man, it took an hour to get up the hill side and the 2 miles in to where the billy was only to find him gone from his bed.

I told Garet we were going to tear apart this valley for 30 minutes when head home as we both had to work today. About 15 minutes in the billy came over and started walking towards us down a knife ridge. I got benched up and waited, he had to get on our side of the knife ridge as I was not going into unknown territory chasing a goat on tired legs. He got to 350, but still perched on the knife ridge and the wind switched, and he walked out of our lives. I was bummed for about 10 minutes, then all hell broke loose when thunder hit us. 2.5 hour hike out was less than fun. 29 miles in 48 hours is a lot in that county.

Back up this week on Thursday to get it done.
