A girl I dated in high school had a grizzly in their yard napping, they live about 30 miles north of Fort Benton.

I'm an avid runner and spend a lot of time in Choteau. Going for a run at dawn is interesting. I don't venture out of town.

And there you go. Forget a big bore pistol or bear spray. Pack a truck with you. I wonder what would have more knockdown, the speed of a half ton or the weight of a 3/4 ton? What do the experts recommend? Humor aside, glad that the dude is OK and that his wife was able to save him. Glad I don't live in big bear country.

I saw a sow with two cubs running across a field right outside of Choteau a couple years ago on my way through there for work. I have no idea where they came from or were going, but they were out in the wide open for miles around.

Used to hunt pheasants up around there, never even thought about coming across a griz. They're expanding their territory quickly. How many people are going to have to get mauled before our elected officials wake the hell up? Glad the guy is going to make it.

yeah, that website makes it hard to read. I’ve tried to copy/paste it.
Its easy for me to critique from my living room, but if I was Shannun my guide gun would have been in hand, along with spray.

The attack was sudden, unexpected and violent. On Monday, Shannun Rammel, a 50-year-old Choteau area resident and father to nine children suffered serious injuries to his hand, back and arm after he unwittingly surprised a grizzly bear that was inside a barn in the middle of farm country.

According to his wife, Jammie Rammel, her husband's injuries are not life threatening, but the family has been left shaken by the attack, which occurred about a mile and a half from their home."As fast as that bear came out and got my husband, he couldn't have gotten to a gun even if he'd had one," Jammie Rammell said while waiting in Great Falls for her husband to go into surgery. "My kids were home last night and I told them to turn on the flood lights, let the dogs out. I want you guys close to the house."Their encounter with the grizzly began with a warning from a neighbor. The Rammel's were driving home from Great Falls when they got a call from the farmer down the road saying he'd spotted bear tracks near the pond that lies between their two houses."Earlier he was getting water out of the pond, and he had walked around and found the bear's tracks," Jammie Rammel said. "We've had grizzly bears up there before and we talk back and forth. If he sees a bear he'll call me. He knows we have nine kids. We've got dogs, pigs, chickens and goats. It's good that your neighbors can be aware and do that for you."

Jammie, Shannun and their 12-year-old daughter stopped at the pond before heading home to look at the tracks themselves. They were just about to leave. Jammie was headed back to their pickup with their daughter. Shannun stopped to check inside a nearby shed to see if there was any old grain left behind that might have attracted the bear. It was dark inside the long abandoned shed."He had just put his head in and looked to the left and then the right, and the bear growled and charged him as fast as it could," Jammie said. "(Shannun) went to run but before he could he tripped. The bear blew past him then spun around and attacked.

"I had to drive slow because in the barley field you can see the ground and I didn't want to run my husband over," she explained.

When they reached the point where the could see him, he was lying face down in the dirt.

"He wasn't moving, so my daughter's screaming, 'He's dead, he's dead!, Jammie recalled. "I told her, he's not dead. He's going to be just fine."

Shannun rose to his feet and walked slowly toward the truck.

"He got up and blood was just gushing," Jammie said. "His shirt was ripped up and he had mud in his teeth."

The injured Shannun got in on the driver's side and drove the pickup to where the field met the road. Jammie told her husband that he needed to let her drive the rest of the way.

"He wrapped his arm because he was splattering blood everywhere," she recalled. "I called the hospital and told them I was on my way."

Jammie was not allowed to be with her husband while he was at the Teton Medical Center due to concerns about COVID-19 transmission. After Shannun was cleaned up and examined, doctors told Jammie had suffered serious cuts and bites to his upper body.

"The bear had bit through his palm and tore a chunk of meat out of it," she said. "He's got four bite marks on his back, and just below his shoulder he's got a big gash with teeth marks in there."

What was the conversation like when he said he would drive after the attack?

"woman move over I'm driving"

"But you were just attacked by a grizzly"

"I ain't dead and this is my truck now move over!"

I guess she eventually convinced him she should drive. though This guy must be an interesting fella.
