intense elbow pain

Update: I have been wearing a copper type compression strap all day, and let my elbow sit for almost week with no BT release. I have been shooting daily with the index wrist strap. No pain. SO I got out my new Carter Just B Cuz, thumb release. I have shot 2 days straight with it and no pain.

I am taking above advice to limit myself and not over do it, so I only shot 3 sets of 6 arrows each.
I like the thumb best of all releases I have and I have a herd of them. I plan to hunt with this if my elbow remains healthy.

I am not laying the back of my hand on my face no more and keeping it more at an angle and watching how I draw to ensure it isn't all arm muscles- at least I think I am.

All my other BT releases required the lever to be held down to draw, but this one , as you all know, requires it not be held down til time to fire. That took some getting used to, but my groups with this are even better than with the revolution. Pretty sure I will sell my Carter hinge Honey 2.

this thread was helpful for me. i have been wanting to switch to archery for a few years now. finally got all set up after spending about $2k. Head into the shop to get tuned up and shoot for the first time. Half of my release hand goes numb almost instantly. Try different releases, same results. Looking like its the ulnar nerve. Now i just need to find out if its my neck, shoulder, wrist or elbow where its getting pinched. At least there is still some time to get fixed before September

I have been pre stretching my neck, and other back, shoulder, arm muscles, I was able to shoot over 80 shots yesterday
20 were with the revolution release that started to high light this issue

Not blaming the release
But it pointed to an issue in me

I'm also wearing one of them copper compression straps all day

For me this is all helping

Sounds like an impingement in your shoulder. Try working some rotator cuff exercises with elastic resistance bands. It should help immensely over time.

I’ve been struggling with lateral epicondylitis on and off for 10 years. It really got bad last summer and I got the shot which didn’t really do much. I’ve been doing PT for the last three months and it is improving but not fixed yet. I am actually scheduled for another shot this morning.

I can tell you that despite years and years of going to the gym my back muscles were very weak in comparison to the rest of my body. This has been a point of improvement I’ve been working on religiously and I’ve had to really increase the pull of my tension release because now it goes off the second I release the safety. So obviously my back strength is improving.

Good luck, keep working hard

I had a medial tear and surgical reattachment (golfers elbow) it went on for about 3 years and my arm was nearly useless, did the surgery, 3 weeks in a cast, 5 weeks of doing nothing but trying to straighten it out and didn't have to do the month of PT, having the surgery was the best thing I ever did, I now have slight bouts with tennis elbow in both elbows, when I feel it start to flare up I stop doing the thing that aggravates it, crappie fishing with 14ft poles in cold weather will bring it on faster than anything for me.

About a year ago I switched from a wrist strap index release (Carter Quickie + 2) to a handheld release (Stan Onnex). I now have fairly bad pain in my middle finger up through muscles/tendons in my mid forearm that seem directly related to the thumb release. My options seem to be
  1. Switch from the 3 finger to 4 finger attachment on the handheld release to see if it distributes the strain more evenly across my release hand
  2. Cut my losses, readjust my draw length, and switch back to the wrist strap index release.
I probably shoot somewhat more accurately with the hand held, but I'm not willing to experience chronic pain for it.

You can change the way you hold the release, most pressure on ring finger then middle finger, very little on the pointer finger. This will rotate the release and hand such that it mirrors the wrist strap you used previously. It might work, might not but only takes 10 minutes to try.

You do you, but I quite successfully integrate a combination of expert opinion and shared anecdotal experience into many of my health decisions.
