Was bored and started to watch YouTube earlier and seen a post by one of the hush guys and I believe his Bff from mountain ops. Already going to shed hunt, and dumb enough to post a video of it basically inviting the 20k followers to think it’s ok to put stress on the herd at this time. The jack nob was even showing how fresh the droppings are from all the activity in the area still. I was under the impression they were on point with conservation and management. Disappointed on this one for sure.

I am east of the big river so I have no idea about shed hunting regs. Is it illegal to shed hunt at this time in UT?

Yes it's legal you do have to take a free online "ethics" course and carry that document with you

Saw a video from someone the other day of a bull dropping his antlers and everyone was telling him how cool it was. The problem was somebody (likely the guys filming it) had pushed the herd and they were all running balls out through some fairly deep snow. Doesn't take a genius to figure out that's not too cool. But if you gotta be Instafamous, I guess you can't let common sense get in your way.

Is it correct to say that most just consider this a time of year when one shouldn't stress the herd by shed hunting?

Correct. This is the most vulnerable time for these animals. They have been stressed with the rut followed by hunting and winter. Cows, if stressed enough over a hard winter can abort their calves as well. Same for deer. Best just to leave them be. I love finding a shed as much as the next guy but I think we have a responsibility to reduce our impacts on their vitality during these times.

There are tons of guys out right now. I think the true problem is if your willing to wait those other guys are scooping all the easy to find sheds. People are pushing earlier and earlier. It's big business right now.

I always asking myself- who the hell is watching these stupid shed hunting video's as I'm watching it for 10 minutes. We are our own worst enemy for sure.

I've seen a few things on YouTube that They do that are sketchy. I saw one well known group shoot a deer across a road with a rifle.

Im not disappointed, but thats because I dont have high expectations for the Hush crew

I agree, I don’t hold them in high reguard but I do expect these people on the forefront of the industry and the larger audience to set a better example of what conservation is and what’s right!!
I sent a message to them on their web page explaining my sentiments toward their activities at this time of year. Hopefully more will do the same.

Having met some of these YouTube types in the field I think a majority are overall good dudes and well meaning, just trying to make a living doing what they love. But in order to run a successful YouTube channel you don’t exactly have to be the sharpest tool in the shed, and I think therein lies the issue. If I’m watching some online content it’s typically to pass the time, but a VERY large percentage of their audiences are watching in order to learn, thinking they’re experts. Monkey see monkey do. They carry a fairly large responsibility because so many impressionable young hunters are watching. There’s definitely some cases where a bit more forethought should have went into their content creation.

I watched that same video and certainly didn't come away from it thinking they were putting any stress on the animals. They ran across some mule deer but the deer were just watching from a distance. Maybe they cut out the part of the deer running through waste deep snow but seems to be a lot of bus throwing without actual evidence.

When elk antlers sell for 10$ a lb, it will be a while before it ever goes away i think. Money pushes alot of things for sure.

shed hunting is stupid anyway. Quite frankly if they eliminated it in sensative areas and showed that its better for wildlife...I would be all for it.

100% agree, one doesn’t have to just run off a herd, just being in the winter range is stressful on the animals. I get we can’t keep people from recreating and I’m not saying that but I do think she’d hunting does more damage for conservation then positive.

They definitely were putting stress on them - you think all those heads standing alert at the top of the hill staring at them is normal deer activity?
