Inconsistent chrono readings on bright sunny days

I shot some loads today that I know measure much more consistently with my Magnetospeed. But I was sighting in so I brought my Pro Chrono shoot through. I got some wild readings, like 150+ spreads. I know these things can struggle on bright bluebird days, which it was, but I also had the diffusers installed too. Is that common? Anything I can do to make it more accurate in bright sun?

Get a larger diffusing screen, or build a box around the Chrono

Would like to keep the amount of crap I haul around to some sort of minimum. Do they sell larger diffusers? What if I placed a white towel or sheet over the top of both diffusers and hanging down a few inches? Or a shallow cardboard box over the top? Shade is not an option. No trees.

I got tired of my Prochrono for this exact reason.
Switched to Magnetospeed. Use Kestrel for velocity verification. Never looked back!

Do tell. What's a MS or LR?
I just answered my own question. MagnetoSpeed or Labradar.

I have a MS. But sometimes it nice to sight in or shoot for groups while measuring velocity at the same time. The MS is just wasted ammo. Hard to swallow doing that 10-12 times these days. The LR sure must be nice, but I'd rather have another whole rifle for that price!

My buddy had that issue and colored the bullet that was showing out of the brass with a sharpie. He said it worked for him but I haven’t personally tried it

MV w/o velocity verification (truing) downrange has been the biggest waste of ammo for me.
Stated BC of any bullet, factory or component, is never accurate IMO.

MS will give you an accurate MV w/o worrying about sky conditions. Then go to range or BLM and put 5-6 different loads on paper at 300-400 yards. I usually start at max and work back in 0.5 grain increments. Pick the one with no elevation change between charges which implies a very stable load with minimal POI change in spite of charge differences +/-. Usually takes no more than 20 rounds and you will have an accurate hunting load.

I don't do any 100 yard range work anymore. Also a waste of ammo IMO. Well, I do have to zero at 100 yards for my Kestrel but the velocity verification or truing is best done closest to transonic range or as far out as you can. Some will have range limitations. BUT....the further out and closer to transonic the better.

Just sharing what works for me after many years of trial and lots of error. Garbage in garbage out.

FWIW.

I use a pro chrono and do the black marker thing. As long as the sun isn't shining straight in the sensors it never misses a shot. Also very consistent readings on various weather days.

I’d sell both your units and get a Labradar. Will cut down on the amount of stuff you bring to the range. I used magneto speed and like their consistency but they throw off poi a good bit on my rifle. I just bought a labradar just haven’t used it yet.

If you go with a Labradar be sure and lay out another 50 bucks for the shot trigger that attaches to your rifle. It is triggered off recoil. Without you'll have missed shots just like an inexpensive chrono. Just my observations....
