In which states are you building preference points?

I am going to make one statement and then I am out. There are no secrets in the west. Eastmans, HF, Epic, Gohunt have taken any that may have been left. You are not going to find an awesome unit that is not already public knowledge. The real key is to find a balance that works for you. If you want to hunt every year the units you choose may be different than those holding out for the "best" units. Me giving a guy a little inside knowledge on a unit I can not draw for another 5 years is not going to slide the odds anywhere near what the magazines is going to do. To the OP the absolute best money you can spend to help sift through the data is on Gohunt. The data is in one place and you can decide what will work for you and your goals.

Which is easily done with 0 points

Your comparing two separate things. Draw units limit the total amount of hunters in that unit making it easier to find solitude. Add to the fact it's a unit that is less desirable the reason you can draw it with zero points. OTC has no limits on hunter numbers and people tend to flock to the best areas which can cause crowding issues and be frustrating. Sure hunting the less desirable parts of a unit may help but then your hunting where the deer don't want to be either.

Have plenty of spots in Arizona for January hunts as well that we never see people. Same in Colorado for elk otc, people complain and whine and cry about the amount of hunters are usually the ones riding the roads. I’ve came from as Far East as you can nearly and had success in Arizona and Colorado both otc. And not just one year but many years. If you can read a map and walk you can get away from people. Will you have to get out of your comfort zone and abandon places that in the past were great places yes... but the animals abandon those places also eventually and you just find where they went. Excuses are just that excuses. But these forums as you said aren’t the problem. It’s the internet sites that are the problem. I can tell you the exact unit to go hunt it doesn’t mean you’ll find the right canyon. And you’re also right there are no secrets anymore, but what there is for certain is there are certain canyons people just over look and or won’t climb to go see. Go find those canyons you find no people.

PM the OP if you want to help. I did. He was a nice guy. Don't share what states or units are good in a google indexed forum. It took me some time to learn that but there's a reason many people who are long-time contributors are taking that stance.

Mostly, new guys who don't get crowded OTC and point creep want to know where to go and don't get how things are in the hunting world out West these days.

You can agree to disagree on this without getting mad.

Shocker, you're from back east. News flash: point creep is going crazy in the West, OTC seasons are cram packed between residents and the growing number of non-resident hunters. Posting states to apply to and units on these forums is not helpful to anyone's cause. No offense taken, just wanted to clarify the reasoning why so many guys prefer PMs to discuss this information.
I find this astounding (and funny), considering how many threads you have started asking for info on specific units.

This is the crap that makes me want to stop helping anyone online.

I'm fine with starting a thread. Just use Pms. If you took the time to read anything here, you'd know that.

WaArcher, you're an idiot.

None. I moved to a place I can hunt otc every year, get lucky and draw limited quota areas if I want, with no resident point system (for now). I have no intentions to get in the point game anywhere.

Agreed. Giving up on the point system besides states I need them to draw General tags as a NR. Moving to OR it’s opportunity is comparatively severely limited from previous years of hunting. Also decided last year to get out of the moose sheep and goat point game.

I recently moved to Kentucky from PA. First year applying for me, but 90% go to residents, so I should have a little better than a snowball's chance.

Not likely. I'm a Kentucky resident and have been applying since they started the draw for elk and haven't been drawn.
