IMO the best coffee system ever

I've even tried doing cowboy coffee and then straining out the grounds through one of those filters. The ground coffee just never tastes very good or the same as it does at home. And I always use an espresso grind on my coffee........very fine like a powder.

Looks similar to a Chemex that I have seen used for pour-over technique in town. The GSI looks like a good way to go.

I had the Jetboil french-press setup, and to me it was more mess and hassle than it was worth.

Via packets to me are still un-beatable for simplicity and flavor, but I may have to try the GSI

While I am sure the coffee tastes better it seems to me more effort and waste than it's worth while hunting. I love my coffee and bring Maxwell house in packets just like tea bags. Much faster and less mess while still having a decent cup to give me my caffeine boost.

I've not tried the Starbucks via but I think I'll have to pick up a box. If I have to get the stove out to heat my water I've never had any real issue with using my filter and ground coffee. Seems alot of people take coffee pretty serious given the discussion we've had over this.

The availability of water is a factor for me. While the French press makes darn good coffee and I’m sure these other filters do also I hate wasting water rinsing stuff out before packing it away. I’m a home roaster and appreciate good coffee (I’m just short of a snob) but Vias are my favorite for taste and water conservation.

So heres the trick; Coarse grind [tell them 12 if at Peets or Starbucks] keep in sealed zip lock. I grind my own just prior to making- Costco SF brand French roast. Fresh grind is better.

Then get yourself one of those French presses....big, small insulated....doesn't matter except that the SS insulated versions are nice.

Boil the water and then let it cool for a bit to drop below 212 deg. If the SS container is cold no need to wait. Pour the water over the grinds, stir for about a minute...let it set for another 2 minutes....more if you like it really dark...less if you like it med.

Push in the strainer slowly...... and you just made a great cup of Joe.

I have one of these that I picked up for an upcoming backpack fishing trip with a buddy and have been using it around the house. Works pretty good. For the price I’m looking at picking up one or two more for different kits.

As much as I like coffee.......that's just way too much effort when I can boil water, pour it in, stir, add some milk, and drink......and have absolutely no mess to clean up. I hardly ever even use my drip coffee maker at home anymore.

My answer: I don’t rinse it until I get to a water source. You can get enough particulate our by just holding the “legs” and whipping the waste grounds put.

To be fair, on ultralight backpacking trips (hunting or otherwise), I’m a Via man.

I have this argument with my wife all the time. She loves coffee. I love the art of coffee. Either is ok, but doesn’t mean we quibble before the first cup in the morning.

I've been playing with a few different systems, too: Sea to summit cone filter, dark timber ascent packs, and Vias. For simplicity, space, time, and flavor, the easy winner is the via.

The flavor may not be as great as the others but it's pretty good. I can get a cup of water to a boil in about a minute with a jet boil and I have coffee with the via. I'm working/waiting for the other two.

The only other thing I might do is drop 2 accent packs into a 20oz hydroflask in order to have hot/fresh coffee when I get to my glassing point in the morning

That's my answer also. I don't seem to worry to awful much about cleaning the thing until it comes handy. I beat the grOunds out and maybe back flush with a little splash of water. I don't recommend leaving the filter wet in storage, I don't find that it stays stored for too long while I'm rambling. Water is a non issue in my home ground here in the east. Water is highly available in most of the area's I frequent.

The Starbucks via looks like it runs about 79 cents a cup, thats a little rich for my taste. Not sure exactly how many cups I can get out a pound of good grade coffee but I'm pretty sure it's a fair amount more affordable than that.
