North American Elk: Ecology and Management

I’ve been looking around for a while now to purchase North American Elk: Ecology and Management but am having a hard time finding it. I’ve seen it on eBay and places for a ridiculous price that I just can’t afford and it’s not at any of the local libraries. I’m getting my kids into hunting along with my nephews/nieces and their friends and would love to have the knowledge and this book to share amongst the group.

Does anyone know where I could get a copy or is anyone selling theirs? It’s going to be well used by the kids so hoping I can find it without breaking the bank. I’m still looking for it in thrift stores but so far no luck.

I appreciate any help, happy hunting!

Old book, I bought it when it came out and dumped it.

IMO, it doesn't help you so much as a hunter. It misses so much.
It doesn't factor in the Numero Uno factor; Hunter pressure.

Tidbits from the book that I can still recall;

1) Elk use heavy timber for bedding....

2) and they don't utilize 30 degree slopes...is not accurate.

I can't even tell you how many times I've encountered elk on steep slopes in hunt seasons. Elk use timber sure...but more and more they use open areas to bed as a buffer where wolves are present.

save your $$, its not all that helpful.

Depending on why you’re buying it, I don’t know if I could justify the $500 on thriftbooks as of this point. Even though I read scientific papers consistently for my job, if you’re looking to improve your hunting prowess, the information that can be found for free here and on other websites is more applicable and understandable. The scientific papers realm is good if you can understand the methods and what the research is aimed at, but sometimes the methods are ridiculously complex and what they are measuring may not be applicable. Resource Selection Studies in your preferred hunting area would be valuable but only to find habitat that the elk that were collared are likely to use. The outliers that lots of people don’t hunt won’t subscribe to those habitats and can be hunted with less pressure sometimes.

I have a copy I'd sell - I can track it down tomorrow and get back to you if interested.

I recently loaned the book out on interlibrary loan. I think it was fun to read, not sure how much I learned, but it was very interesting. My favorite was the naming of a herd bull -> haram master.

I would like to own it too… but it’s more a fun research tool than a good way to teach your people to hunt.

I had a copy years ago - not super helpful as a hunting book, but all books are good. :)

Used Zumbo books are good for elk hunting, and are dirt cheap nowadays.

"Elk and elk hunting " by Hart Wixom ,I thought resonated with me as to what I had seen out hunting and wondered what was happening.
40 years ago I moved to Colorado and tried to teach myself Elk hunting, before the internet
