I just finished reading this book. It's awesome and I highly recommend. Idaho has a proud heritage of big bucks that unfortunately does not really exist in a significant way today. I was also struck by how concentrated the entries were.

I was getting excited to hunt one of the counties and it's just been slammed recently by the bad winters. I'll get in there soon enough.

Major kudos to Ryan Hatfield for producing this great history of Idaho mule deer.

I need to get that one, or both of them that is. His elk book is pretty good as well from what I've skimmed of it.

Met Ryan this year and he is a great guy. My wife's grandfather has an entry that I am fortunate enough to look at every time I am at my in-laws house.

Kyle, ha ha! Yes I was lucky to accidentally run into a 200 incher a few years back. Outside of that I'm not really a big buck hunter. There's a few bruisers taken every so often. Things have changed over the years & these days there are better states & areas to hunt the big guys in! Thanks!

I remember when I was young growing up in WI and infatuated with Idaho deer. I dont know what it was but you could just tell an ID buck from others. I dont know if it was the terrain in the background or the deer or what but I remember drooling over ID deer. Its a little sad to me but now that I finally made it out west ID just is not what it used to be. Still haven't hunted the state. I will have to check out that book.

Is this posted anywhere to read online?

I strongly recommend you buy the book also. There's hundreds of incredible stories in it. I'm close friends with the writer and was lucky enough to travel with him to meet some of the lucky hunters featured in the book. The history preserved in it is more than I could do justice trying to describe.

P.S.if someone ever tells you they're Jim bridger's great-great grandson and they killed a buck that's almost 45 inches wide. There is a slim possibility that it's truth even if everything in you wants to believe it's a lie!!! 😉 IMG_20170828_110616_181.jpgI got to meet a descendant of Jim bridger!!!!

Awesome story, thanks.

I love that quote at the end: "It wasn't even that we thought it would last forever; it was that it was so common and natural that that we never even had to think about it not lasting forever."

I cannot even imagine what that time must have been like. However, its a reminder how times change things. Even what we have today seems so common and natural. It can all easily disappear.
