If you live in Idaho you should already know that the hunting proclamation booklets only come out every two years. There aren't going to be earth shattering changes to season dates. If someone buys a tag in December and can't figure it all out before the following September, then perhaps the great outdoors isn't for them.

Because I have lived here all of my life, I obviously haven’t bought a nonresident tag before the regs come out. Common sense really.

Also, in the last decade, one of my OTC elk hunts got eliminated, the other went to short range weapon only. So they do change quite a bit. I asked the question because of the above reason. Say an OTC rifle hunt goes to archery only, is a nonresident stuck with that tag? We aren’t talking about peanut $$$ here.

I'm with you, can't really wrap my mind around spending that much $$ not knowing what I'm really getting and, at least what appeared in print, no ability for a refund. I made similar mention in a different thread and Robby mentioned an example where the dates changed and ID refunded the $$ so it may be possible.

No, common sense really. If they change one from OTC rifle to archery only nonresidents don't get "stuck" with the tag. IDFG has made changes to their refund process in the past couple of years.

I couldn’t afford to wait. The four zones I scouted and researched last summer all sold out day one.

Tag in my pocket.

I didn't even know this happened and probably wasn't going to hunt ID next year anyway. But what the hell is with selling them so far in advance? Like the couldn't even wait until spring? Who the F plans ahead that far?

I think there will be many people, deer hunters especially, very surprised in the next 7-8 months

Well they have always been available this early but with the new caps they triggered the new early demand.

They gotta get those tags sales and licenses locked in to fund them because they are doing a horrible job managaing and Im sure tag sales are going down. I would say you money and hunt a different state until ID pulls their head out. Lived here my whole life and the herds are going way down not to mention the hyatid disease running through the herds from wolves.

Yep. My elk this year had the cysts on the liver/lungs. It won’t be long before the OTC hunts turn to draw. The writing is on the wall.

Can someone drop the cliffnotes on what just happened? Didn't they sell out in July for 2020 this year and that was considered early? Haven't been paying attention, I'm sure there's a 32 page thread on it somewhere but my attention span isn't there tonight,

They capped non resident participation by zone for elk. If you wanted to hunt a capped zone you couldn’t wait.

Deer they capped by unit.

For elk, ID non-resident tags sold out the last two years, which a sell-out elk season hadn’t happened since 2007/2008, I think.

It used to be only a couple elk zones were capped tags, and the rest of the zones all shared a cap of about 11,000 non-res tags. Now they’ve taken those 11,000 “group” non-res tags and allocated them to specific zones, so ALL elk zones and tags “A and B” are capped.

But those sell-outs in 2018/2019 happened in August/July (respectively); July sold out prior to draw results getting posted. ID has become a hotbed for non-res tag sales last couple years... I think the ability to hunt an area year after year and learn it became very appealing to a lot of folks.

Im a Non resident that logged in 15 minutes after it opened...and was over 10,000 in line. That being said, its a move in the right direction. While the number of Non residents didnt change, you could have have 5,000 show up in one unit and almost none in another. Residents may not want to hear it, but i can see them making this change for you also.

Biggest complaint i would have is there is no provision for a party application. Our unit of Choice sold out in about a half hour. The backup unit that we got was down to 8 tags by the time i got my turn. Can easily have family or hunting partners get a tag and you don't.

Idaho is a great state to hunt and all no residents will need to decide if the additional expense and hassle is enough draw back to go somewhere else. There will always be some of us willing to fill any vacancies

I agree that a group option needs to be added before next year. It would be simple enough for a person to login as a "Group leader" and add up to 3 other hunters just like the controlled hunt applications. Then the group leader purchases the tags for everyone in the group.

+1 for a group option for next year. I got a tag, buddy didnt. I don’t think going to a straight draw for everything would be terrible.

Agree on adding the group option. Amazing to see how fast many areas sold out. Increased price tag was a little difficult to swallow, but appreciate the opportunity to hunt out West. You can't expirience that kind of country back east. Beautiful & humbling!
