Found 3 barrels today in unit 10. One was right off an old developed site up a well defined atv trail and 300 yards past that in a burn scar you can see from the road…. Put out in the last couple of days. That person is going to have a lot of people on it this spring with how good the morel picking has been.

Just driving back from Idaho, we tried getting into the Frank from Stanley (May 7th, 2 feet of snow), North side (Salmon River and Forks were high.) Hunted unit 28 all week until Friday, Being my first hunt I learned a ton. The first days I was hunting what I thought was "green-up" and later in the week found other areas that are actually green up. Long story short, We went to early and hunted at too high of an elevation. Didn't get to see any bears, but did run into some locals that were starting to bait and confirmed our suspicion of why we were not seeing anything. I'm always open to new information, and the biggest take away coming from Iowa to Idaho is that if you think your in shape, the mountains will show you otherwise. All around it was a great time and we are looking forward to doing it next year.

Rolling back with tags still in hand, unfortunately. We hunted all of unit 4 and a decent amount of 6. I just don’t think they’re out yet. Unit 6 was super green but a lot of 4 wasn’t green until our last day. 4 looks like it’s going to be awesome this next week. Best of luck, gents!

What temps were you seeing? We had highs in the 40s and lows down to 12. Curious as to the northern part as well, we were in 28

The boy and I are headed out in the morning. 2 weeks ago we canceled just before take off. It’s been a long hard wait these last 2 weeks.

I had originally planned to leave the 14th but thanks to some generous Rokslide mafia advice I pushed it back two weeks. Can’t wait to get there...

I’m rolling out the 25th. Sounds like it will be a good time to go. Wish I could have stuck with my 20th date but I think it’ll still be right.

Hunted the past three days in SE Idaho near home. I think it’s a little early for the green up but we found some tender new green grass. I can tell looking at photos from last year that we are probably two weeks behind this spring.

Late last night while we were walking out of our spot, my son tells me “Now I know we are really spring bear hunting.” I ask him why he says that and he said, “well, we couldn’t get into out first spot because of downed trees and snow drifts, we got the truck stuck in the mud at the second spot, we sat in the rain all afternoon, and then it was too windy to shoot. Feels like spring bear to me.” Made me laugh.

Agreed and jealous of all of you leaving in the next few weeks. We went the last week of may/first of June last year and we were almost late. Hard without boots on the ground.

We had rain 5 of our 8 days/nights. Snow pack still anything past 4500 unless it was in direct sun in 4, 6 was good to go except a few areas. Temps were in the 50s on sunny days and in the low 40s when raining. Night time we were in the low 30s and one night in the 20s.

Warren/South Fork of the Salmon road update. This is for the folks wanting to access the Southfork of the Salmon via Warren.

🚧
SECESH/WARREN WAGON ROAD UPDATE
🚧

In a typical year, we are able to open the road by Memorial Day Weekend, however this spring has been anything by typical. Right now there is still 38" of snow on Secesh Summit and we are only losing about 2" of snow per day (it is usually closer to 4-5" per day this time of year).
So, Warren Wagon Road/Secesh Summit will remain unplowed for Memorial Day Weekend. Road Department crews plan to start opening the summit on June 6th. We will post updates here as they become available.

More moisture coming this weekend. I'll be surprised if they hit that June 6th date.

Accumulating snow above 6k. Should be an interesting weekend, I’m camped at 5.5k. At least the mushrooms are out!

Central ID. Snow making roads impassable over 6200ft or so, sometimes lower. Snow line *was* around 5700. Seeing fresh green around 5000.

Went to sleep last night at 5400 expecting rain, woke up to 3 inches of snow. Everything is covered, even down in the valleys below 4000ft. What do you do in these situations? Do the bears go down to below the snow? Do they hole up? Any advice appreciated

I've been a lurker for a while but just discovered this thread. I'm planning a trip to Wyoming next year for antelope with a couple of buddies. It will be our first western trip but since we don't have a lot of points, we've been thinking about a backup plan. I read the thread straight through (all 26 pages) and think spring bear in Idaho will be a good backup/2nd trip.

Thanks for all the good info on here!

I would advise choose a trip and stick with it. After my first DIY, we planned on fishing more but didn't have time due to the shear amount of knowledge we were gaining by trial and error. We are putting in points for antelope for a couple years to try to get into a better unit. Bear will test your gear I believe more than what I imagine antelope would.

Good luck with whichever route you take and my one piece of advice is push yourself physically when training.

Yeah, we're definitely sticking with Antelope as our 1st choice. If we get tags we'll just do that. We just want to have a backup in case we don't draw tags so that we can do something that year.

Being a non-res, I only see unit 32 being closed and portions of 24. Is there anywhere else other than the controlled hunt areas I'm not seeing? Just curious. Thanks
