Looking for any advice on the Selway unit. We are going for October rifle elk and will all have a deer tag. Digital scouting now and it’s ROUGH country. Thanks for any help!

Hopefully you guys know how to glass big country and hopefully you see at least one deer or elk with antlers.

Hopefully you introduce yourself in the FNG section and hang around awhile. Can learn a lot here!

It's gorgeous country with a couple of elk and deer. Enjoy your back packing trip.

Went there for a second elk hunt. Always a day behind them. When you find Wolfe sign, gtfo and move to a different area 10 miles away. Wolves cleared them out of the area we were in. Had a calf get killed day before season. Never seen an elk after. 2 of the biggest whitetail I have ever seen though.

You have your work cut out for you and I don’t mean the terrain. Be prepared to cover a TON of ground looking for the needle in the haystack.

My advice... when you find elk do NOT spook them by still hunting. Find fresh sign. Then find the best spot you can to set up for a shot and sit there.... for days if that’s what it takes.

I agree you spook them one ridge over may eliminate your chances all together of ever seeing them again. I don’t know that there is a word to correctly describe the terrain in parts of that unit but one ridge doesn’t sound like much but till you see it for yourself

I appreciate all of the information. We are excited for the challenge and trying a new state. The Topo maps definitely speak to the steepness. The information on spooking is great! Will make sure not to do that.

When you get into a drainage especially at the top you’d think there’s no way out but back down. That’s pretty much true but of course the elk have their escape routes and can disappear from your life forever in a flash.

Group of 4 of us have tags for elk and deer. Planning on llamas and a scouting trip in August.

We are looking at doing llamas as well. I was skeptical at first but considering if we do more back country hunts to invest in llamas of our own. It seems lime they will allow to be lighter and move faster.

Like others have mentioned have some kind of animal to pack your shit. Cover country and use big glass.

I have said this before, the country looks like it should be full of elk and deer but it's just not. Very small pockets of elk and even less deer.

Hey I seem to remember something like this... I went back down to the selway side for another two days after you guys took off and still never saw an elk.

Once you get tired of not seeing any deer or elk, drop elevation near the selway or salmon river and you will get into whitetails.

Or you can shoot a mule deer doe off the magruder corridor road. Thats pretty easy, considering some of them will eat out of your hand.

Well turns out my tags were in transit to Idaho fish and game to make the switch while they sold out have not confirmed they got there in time so there is a possibility I may be holding a selway tag again after all. I have the opposite tag as you do and would like to hear what your plan of attack is and I’ll go a little more in depth for what I have seen and know for that area. Shoot me a PM if you’re interested

Spent a few days scouting. BIG country. Checked a few items off the list. Excited to get back in with a gun.
