Idaho NR general tag going to draw?

Just wait. You got to give it a few years of people thinking and then realizing that taking it to a draw didn’t help. Then they will start to push for point systems.
Possibly, all I can do though is each time I am sent a survey I make sure to say that points system is an absolute non starter.

I'm assuming the outfitter gets preference over NR's?!? Are the NR's that put in for that unit drawing dead if the outfitter is applying for the same unit? Just curious.
If I am not mistaken, Idaho sets aside tags for outfitters. So in the example above there is 40 NR tags in a given unit, outfitters get a stake in those, lets say 4 tags. That leaves 36 for NR to apply for. You can call it preference I suppose but its set from the start, before the draw.

No need for points. Just require you buy a license to enter the draw like Alaska, Nevada, ect…
Then they can collect the moneys on license sales to folks who wont use the license rather than collect the moneys selling points to folks.
I think points offers a more “captured” client than a required license purchase does. Especially systems like Wyoming that erase your points if your not a loyal client.

That is correct. If you look through the previous allocations, there are a few zones that exceed that 10 percent now .

Wyoming erases points if you don't apply every year?
  • If a person fails to purchase a preference point during the preference point-only application period for elk, deer, or antelope for two (2) consecutive years, all accumulated points for that species will be lost.

All limited control hunts (all species) should be resident only. Increase the general non resident tags a small % to make up the budget difference or increase the resident limited control tag cost to make up the difference. Especially the big three (moose, sheep & goat) should be resident only.

Thanks. As a CO resident I bet Idaho folks are pumped about that. Glad Idaho is taking care of their own.
Yes I like this more fair for folks who can’t get a resident in line and reducing to 10% is also good. Unfortunately the next will be to put more caps on resident hunters as we are also a big part of overcrowding with the never ending surge of people moving to the once great Gem state

There shouldn’t be an NR tags for once in a lifetime species for NR in my opinion

Ultimately before there is any hate
We can all blame ourselves for this mess…

YouTube knuckle heads put out western hunt videos and how to draw videos, where to apply you name it we all ate it up like crack and now we are reaping the rewards of tags getting harder to come by every year

I agree with @CorbLand . There are going to be folks that may never draw, that were able to buy a tag in years past. Sorry @Ross, I know you were a big fan of the way it is now. It will be interesting to see if purchasing a license in order to put in for the draw will be required. My guess is it will and that might sour people on trying at all.

I don't see how zone/unit specific draw for these tags is going to fix anything... At least the way it is now you can see what's still available when your turn comes and select accordingly. Some simple revisions to the current system would have been sufficient. Like... allow groups to purchase tags together, prevent tag mule purchasing, etc.

I think the main gripe is that currently, there are ways to get more opportunities to purchase a tag on the day tags go on sale. In person sales, where store owners are charging for places in line. Flying in to Idaho and buying 10 tags for you and friends, logging in to the system on multiple devices, etc. There probably more. So they are trying to at least make it a more level playing field.

There is not a perfect system, residents will bitch about NR ruining their hunts and NR will bitch they can't get a tag. No matter what system they choose, there will be a downside and neither side will stop complaining.

Kinda my point. With a few tweaks to the current system, these "loopholes" could be closed to create a more level playing field without going to a draw.
