I AM A HUGE SUPPORTER OF OUR FARMERS AND LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY. Lets get that out of the way first. I do believe we can both win in this.

Hey everyone, myself and another noteable organization I will announce at a later date will be writing up a proposal to try and move the date of grazing into July and August instead of september, where many of you hunt, spend many amounts of time and money to either travel or use vacation for this great time of year. I'm sure many have had frustrating experiences with livestock and the sheepherders in general.

Personally, i normally can get away from the sheep and cows, minus a few times this year. Being 2 miles in and meeting sheep up on top of a ridge wasn't the greatest feeling. Or heading into an elk bugling and running into cattle halfway between the bull and us, sending the cattle running up to the bull.

I will share a few experiences from this season as well as last season wuth them. From myself or other hunters i have talked with.

I'm not one to whine if you will, they serve their purpose, but why not earlier?

Last season we had a herder getting "friendly" with his horse. Unfortunately we have trail cam evidence of this. A group from Nevada that have been coming for the last 10 years will not be coming anymore due to the livestock issue. This season, intentionally running sheep through a guys stand, being 78 he isnt able to get out in the trees like most of us. How I know this was intentional, the 78 year old confronted him. Herder was unaware he was fluent in Euskara. Having sheep every year ran through multiple camp grounds. Multiple livestock bags left in the mountains on the ground. Cutting "green" trees down to fix corals. Herders park their wagon on top of other camp/hunters. While some of us have to bring their dogs along, one hunter had to break up a dog fight between his dog and a pyrenees, getting bit in the process. Not to mention the multiple sheep left behind, or dead/sick that will bring predators into camp or stir away elk or deer away from the ones that hunt stands or sit water.

What we are looking for are experiences/frustrations in written form emailed to me. Also, any organizations that would like to support this, please feel free to email me as well.

Put the subject as "livestock proposal"

[email protected]

Thanks everyone.

If this is somewhat not allowed please notify myself and i will delete.

Yep! I hate to see what he does to the sheep

Ive never hunted in sheep areas but unit 13 had very limited public land, and A lot of that public land Has cattle grazing. Some of it has so many cattle you can barely walk around without stepping in shit. Frustrating.

Preston, you might combine your threads or move them to a general discussion forum. An admin could do that for you!

Good luck man!

Thanks brotha! Not sure how I can combine them. Just wanted people to see. As well as have constructive criticism.

Like i said before, livestock hold their purpose on our public lands some of us would just like them to go in earlier. Itll help both ranchers and hunters alike out in my eyes.

I don't do much pre-season scouting due to the fact that I've been burned finding elk weeks before...only to have the valley cleared out opening weekend due to sheep herds. It's not worth the $100+ round trips in gas money and most importantly...TIME.

Now I just go...find where they are and go the opposite way.

Do yourself a favor and go meet with the range manager of either the forest service or blm and learn what your proposal is up against.
You can't turn out for grazing early mostly because of plant grazing tolerances
.
Grazing allotments are legally binding agreements, each typically lasting a decade and can only be adjusted as outlined in the agreement. Doubtful anyone holding an allotment would agree to more restrictive wording being added.

And we've done that unfortunately. But for the 78 year old guys that can't, definitely hurts their last few years of the hunt.

They most likely won't meet face to face with you because of Covid concerns. It's everyone's new excuse to get out of anything they don't want to deal with. I went down this same road a few years ago. PM me with any questions you have. You'll be amazed at how corrupt the grazing leases and the management of said leases really is. I was met with brick walls and anonymous threats at every turn.

The amount of outside monetary value associated with grazing allotments would surprise most people.

I hunt where sheep are present in Idaho, and personally I like them being around. Stockman and hunters have a common interest in predator control. It doesn't take many sheep or cows getting killed by wolves before there's a call for government trappers to ply their trade and thin the numbers down some and that benefits the game around as well. So long as they aren't overgrazing, keep them out there to be bait for the predators.
