Idaho Elk

I’m heading this year out to the Frank with Wilderness Mule Outfitters. Seems like a tougher hunt, but didn’t want to burn the points I had and hated the idea of a lodge hunt in NM.

What you going to eat? Air?
I am not quite sure why anyone uses these forums, just a bunch Dr. elk hunters like to talk crap to guys trying to go chase elk in a new area. Peak fuel meals weight 6oz do the math or do you need help with that.

OP, no offense but you need to be more realistic. The amount of calories needed to hunt for 10 days in that country alone would weigh half or more of your pack weight. And what you going to do if you actually kill something the size and weight of an elk?

If you guys are packing in 25lbs of food that might be the problem.

It is fairly easy to carry 10 days of food in your pack with high quality dehydrated meals. Typically estimate 1.5 pounds per day. I am not carrying my camp the entire time but we are planning on taking our base camp back in about 6 miles then will hike from there with our hunting packs.

Just backpacked, not even hunting. for many years to know. But you let us know how it goes.

Agree, 11.5 pounds.

Its not like we are carrying wall tents and stoves. So yeah i think can. Pack with everything is ~52 lbs. Leaving tents, bags, and food at camp would only eliminate ~10 lbs.
The point was that if you are carrying your camp on your back until you get into elk, you will be carrying it the entire time because you will not get into elk there.

I think it depends on what kind of camp your packing you may be better making a base camp a certain distance in if taking an actual
Tent, poles and stakes.. If you are using just a bivy sack or quilt and minimal camp That may be a different story. I personally don’t want my entire camp the entire time on my back but will do base camp and possibly spike camps to help so don’t have to hike back up big ridges every day.

Don’t know that I read this correctly, you’re saying that you would start off with a 52lb pack hunting rough country and it might drop by 1-2 pounds a day by consuming food? Besides carrying in my stuff to drop it at a predetermined camp area or packing meat out I’m not putting that much on my back while hunting.
