We don't have enough low to medium demand tags for antlered game. All the antlered tags are low odds for a reason, high demand.
I’d beg to differ, there are several tags out there with that could be regularly drawn 2-5 years if there was a system in place.

I disagree, I hunt and apply states that have all the different systems.

I personally liked Oregon's system when I lived there. As a resident I knew when I was going to draw and I also drew a few tags out of the random pool. (75/25 PP vs Random)

On severely limited entry tags I did keep a pile of points to draw them and hunted other opportunities while I waited. (Not sure I would do it again to be honest, missed some good stuff on the wait) That being said, my best friend drew one of the hardest elk tags in the state with half the needed points out of the random.

I like Nevadas except the 5 choice option which severely dilutes draw odds.

The place where it becomes a constraint is HD tags with low tag numbers. 40 early rifle bull, you’re never going to draw it points or no points for example.

Points and Bp systems work on low to medium demand tags, low tag numbers and high demand will always be a constraint no matter the system.
No one talks about this. If Nevada went to a draw more where everyone went through 1st choice at the same time (like CO but bonus and not preference pts), the draw odds on the low tier units would go way up. Having 5 choices makes all the units draw odds suck for NR

78, 39, 18 etc, several mid season bull tags as well.

OK some of those tags are +/- 20% draw odds last year so your theory about drawing every 5ish years seems correct. However what happens 8 years down the road when people realize they aren't drawing the 54 rifle tag they wanted initially and burn 8 points just to get a tag, any ol tag? Point creep, just like every state that has points.

Look at any state with points and you'll see guys dumping 20+ points on a crappy tag just to be able hunt before they die and creep just gets worse.

Rarely, what you see more often is point sharing from a non hunting spouse or a guy who wants to hunt with his buddies on a lesser hunt.

Bonus point or a split system reward those that wait yet still offer new hunters a chance to draw.

On the counter point, what about the guy who applies for 15 years for 54 rifle and never draws randomly? I like to plan my hunts and scout, not just guess when I’ll draw and be way behind the 8 ball when results come out.

Idaho shorts you on your scouting time because the draws so late.

For example I when I drew my long wait elk tag in Oregon, knowing I was going to draw I had over 50 days in the unit in the prior years in preparation.

I'll agree with you on this point.

Sounds like you should stick to states that offer a point system and leave states that don't to the people who don't want to be involved in them, respectfully.

I live here and still apply every year and I apply in multiple states every year and I have drawn a few tags.

One can still participate and think that there maybe a better way to do it.

At least in NM I know soon enough to make some plans.

While I respect your opinion, I'll always have a firm anti points stance. I apply in states with points also but I prefer Idaho's current controlled hunt system although I wish results were out much earlier.

You’ll have to pry the current system from my cold dead hands. Point systems are a scam for all, especially our children.

I’ve drawn moose and highly coveted elk tag back to back first years applying for those units. Both in the last 5 years. Our current system is the best in the west.

Why is a bonus point system a scam?

I don’t really care either way. Whether it’s a point system or random draw you gotta play the game if you want a tag.

Ask the guys who have 30+ and don't draw.
They wouldn’t most likely have drawn either with random system either.

Almost every state has a random component, the issue isn’t the point system its limited supply of high demand opportunities.

One of they guys I bird hunt with has 25 years of applying for antelope with no tags in Idaho, he has the same worse odds next year.
