Elk is looking good for this year. Deer a bit slower.

No then it would clearly be an out of touch marketing pitch. They had to acknowledge the issues with mule deer but glossed over it too much.

I 100% agree with this. If you're coming from out of state for deer, and thinking central Idaho, you better have backup plans. It's depressing trying to turn up bucks. Any bucks. That's as honest of an assessment as I can give.

Followed several mild winters. Two of the last 3 winters have hammered the deer in Idaho.

It's funny to me when IDF&G "barely" acknowledges the low mule deer populations and then moves on to "but whitetail hunting will be great!". I've spent the last few weeks scouting for sheep with a good friend in some of the best high country habitat availible. I've seen some elk, (nothing to write home about), plenty of goats and sheep, but the lack of mulies is almost unnerving. 17 days glassing this summer and I've seen a total of 2 bucks. One 140 ish buck and a forky. Maybe we need to think about ESA protections for mule deer.....
