Heading to Idaho in September for elk/deer in the Selway, have not hunted this area before but have been doing as much research as possible online and have been finding out wolves, steep terrain, and what a lot of people are saying is no animals. There is also not very much info out on this unit, Plan on doing lots of hiking covering as much area as possible and setting up a spike camp if an area looks promising. Does anyone have any info on this unit? or more specific any suggestions about thing to try or areas to avoid? If anyone else is heading out fall 2019 would love to chat and share info.

Here's a diary cam type video I made last year in that area. I remember a thread last year about this area, and a lot of people were saying how crowded it is. That's only half true. The parking lots are crowded, and the main trails close to trailheads, but once you get a couple of miles away you won't see anyone. Low populations of deer and elk combined with difficult conditions makes it a tough hunt. There is a good population of black bear, if that interests you. It's a beautiful place. Good luck.

The majority of new guys to that area go a week and don't see a living creature bigger than a squirrel. Guy after guy and they're all looking for a new place the next year. The steepness beats the tar out of them too. You have to be enthralled with the idea of wilderness, otherwise people shortly move to places that have decent animal populations. In many areas it's hard to escape horse pressure.
