In the back country, I run my Samsung in Ultra Power saving mode unless I need to use the GPS or other features. It will literally run for days on end like that. Love the S7 Edge, it's exceeded my expectations. I was concerned about durability of the rolled edge feature on the screen, but it's been bomber.

For the least software issues I would go with the Google phones getting released today, or the previous generation Google Nexus 5X. However if you want a lot of options for cases they aren't as popular so you won't have as many options as you would a Motorola or Samsung. The Moto Z or S7 will both work great for your use case. I have never been incommunicado unless by my own fault when screwing with the software. The other positive is that both the Google and Moto are cheaper than the S7, but my guess is that the S7 will have a slightly better camera (HTC, who is making the Google phones have never had the best camera, but good enough). The advantage to the S7 is that it is waterproof and you will have a ton of options for cases due to popularity.

The problem I've had using an older phone in the hills is that in areas of low coverage Verizon has shut down their 3G towers when replacing with LTE so my old shitty phone that only has 3G didn't work where my new phone did. Also, I use my phone as my GPS so I like to have my waterproof Sony phone with me.

Thank you for taking the time to decipher for me ! I'm going to look at S7's, MOTO Z's and Nexus 5 and try to make a choice

I would very seriously look at the new Google Pixel. The only downside is that it isn't waterproof. Other than that it is going to be the best phone available software-wise. Google has also provided a tool to make switching from an iPhone easier.

Not much I can say... had my Galaxy S5 for nearly 2yrs.
I put it in a lifeproof case on day one and while the case looks like it's seen better days the phone is like new. It's gone for more than one swim while fishing or duck hunting, and I've even taken a few underwater pics... albeit quickly.

I'm not much of an app guy, but that danged memo tool... shit, I use the HELL out of that!

Battery life...
I can get 3-4 days of moderate use.
9 day hunts... I need to recharge once.
My buddy's iPhone 5 went less than half as long.

I like mine.

First thing I did (unintentionally) was drop my iPhone 7 in the hot tub. No prob! That's enough for me.

I believe I'm just about fed up with Apple and their I-phone - Second time this year my phone just went dead, will not power up, it happened 3 times last month (second phone), first time it just came back on the next day, second time I took it to a local independent cellular shop (that is awesome BTW) they worked on it for a couple of hours then it just powered up for no reason while they had it (no charge but I bought a refurb 4c for back up), third time went dead while in Mexico last week and is still DOA - I live 100 miles from an Apple Store and the online diagnostic help link is a JOKE

I realize there are I-phone lovers and Samsung lovers but the consensus I have is that Samsungs are infinitely more dependable and I'm looking for opinions before I make my next move - I know at least 3 people using Samsung 3 or 4 series phones with not so much as a hiccup - I've also been told by a died in the wool Apple guy that if he gets a year out of his I-phone he figures he is doin good

Opinions or Advice please ? (Oh, and I'm not a techy guy, I have THREE apps on my current I-phone, the one that's dead after 10 months) also, I'm not necessarily looking for warranty comments as much as I'm looking for reliability comments and experiences

Update: I drove up to Portland's Apple store yesterday and stood in line for 90 minutes then explained that I'd suffered through 3 iPhones in under 2 years, they looked at the latest failure then said there was nothing they could offer but to buy a new phone at full retail ..... my new Samsung S7 arrives tomorrow (the ONLY thing remarkable about this whole story is that I didn't punch anyone !!)

S7 is a Samsung - I dare say that it will be a cold day down below before I so much as set foot in a "bad apple" store again

In 6 yrs I'm on my second iPhone (5s) only because I washed the first one, my wife has an iPhone, and I got both my parents iPhones. The vast majority of our friends and family have iPhones. No issues that I'm aware of there are lemons with everything.
Wife switched from a blackberry and brother in law switched from a Samsung android.

For digascoping I believe the android has a better camera so I may switch from my iPhone for that reason alone

It'd be cheaper to just buy an older RX100, would make for better photos as well.

I've seen amazing photos from both on other forums. People say they set it to save as a "r.a.w" file then use a photo editing program. Not a camera guy, sorry if I got the lingo wrong.

Probably more info than you really want to know, but in case you wanted an explanation:

RAW image formats are uncompressed image formats usually not supported by phones. Most only shoot jpegs. RAW images contain a header and then the raw value passed to the analog to digital converter for each pixel when the sensor was sampled. These are often saves as 16 bit values instead of the usual 8 bits supported by JPEG. This means that instead of 256 possible values for each channel (RGB, 24 bits total) meaning just under 17 million possible values for 8-bit there are 65536 possible values per channel (48 bits total) resulting in more than 281 trillion possible values (more than 16 million times more information) for 16-bit. However, your monitor can only display 8 bits per channel, so all that extra information is only useful when editing. JPEG also is a lossy compression algorithm meaning that in order to reduce file size it will throw away data. This is configured with the "quality" value, which defaults to 8; a value of 10 will result in a near lossless compression.

TLDR: Phones don't usually support RAW.

If I understand correctly, raw would be good for when you want to make a large print or do crazy editing?

The more information, the less artifacts you will see and the less interpolation that the software has to do. Think of it like rounding numbers. Think of something that costs $1.50. Would it really bother you if someone rounded it off to $2? Probably not. Now think if you were buying 1000 of them. If you rounded before it would be $2000 compared to $1500 so the difference would be $500. Now you might care. So yes, if you took a perfect picture every time then you wouldn't care, but if you touch it up at all then you will notice and not be able to do as much and pull out some of the detail.

As far as blowing it up, doesn't matter as much since most printers also only support 8 bits per channel.

I have owned both phones and both have their positives. In my experience iPhones are less likely to have major problems. I have had issues with both but less with iPhones. Android over all is a better OS. The ease of use as far as getting to your pics, songs, and other saved data is hands down easier on Android. The ability to add storage obviously is only on the Samsungs. In the end I stay with Apple due to Siri, and iMessage.

looks like samsung really screwed up with their new phones....they can't figure out why they keep catching on fire....FAA won't even let you put those things in check luggages as they fear they will catch fire and bring the plane down....there was a video on the news the other day of a guy who left his samsung phone in his jeep...the phone caught fire and burned his jeep to the ground.....I'll stick with my iPhone...at least I dont have to worry about it setting my house on fire when I charge it at night!!!

This is the Galaxy Note 7 only (not a phone, it's a phablet). I suspect that it is a ventilation issue with the newest version being the first that is truly waterproof. No phones have very good ventilation and will overheat, but the note 7 has the most powerful processor and biggest screen ever put in a phone/phablet.

There are reports of iPhone's doing the same thing. iPhone 7: Exploding Apple iPhone 7 shown in photos | BGR

All devices with lithium ion batteries can have this problem if they overheat. Engineers do their best to put protection circuits in Lithium batteries, but they can overheat and/or short at the wrong spot and blow up. I would recommend not leaving a phone in your car where it will be in full sunlight. I have to leave mine in my car for work and if I don't put it in the shade I will have overheat warnings when I get back in my car a couple hours later.

Also, a reminder to those who don't (care to) remember high school chemistry: Lithium is an Alkeli metal, so if you do ever have a battery catch on fire, whatever you do DON'T put water on it. Chemical fire extinguishers or moving the device somewhere to safely burn is the best solution.

I switched from iPhone to a Samsung s7 and I much prefer it I would avoid the Note 7 until they get a handle on the whole bursting into flames deal...
