i-phone vs. Samsung

I believe I'm just about fed up with Apple and their I-phone - Second time this year my phone just went dead, will not power up, it happened 3 times last month (second phone), first time it just came back on the next day, second time I took it to a local independent cellular shop (that is awesome BTW) they worked on it for a couple of hours then it just powered up for no reason while they had it (no charge but I bought a refurb 4c for back up), third time went dead while in Mexico last week and is still DOA - I live 100 miles from an Apple Store and the online diagnostic help link is a JOKE

I realize there are I-phone lovers and Samsung lovers but the consensus I have is that Samsungs are infinitely more dependable and I'm looking for opinions before I make my next move - I know at least 3 people using Samsung 3 or 4 series phones with not so much as a hiccup - I've also been told by a died in the wool Apple guy that if he gets a year out of his I-phone he figures he is doin good

Opinions or Advice please ? (Oh, and I'm not a techy guy, I have THREE apps on my current I-phone, the one that's dead after 10 months) also, I'm not necessarily looking for warranty comments as much as I'm looking for reliability comments and experiences

There was a similar discussion on here a couple weeks ago. Plenty of tech savvy guys on here. To bad I'm not one of them or I would link the other thread. I'm hard on phones but my 5s keeps on ticking. My next phone will be a Samsung too

I've had the Note 3 since it came out, it's been flawless. The fact that it has a removable battery is an extra bonus.

No experience with iphones. I thought only teenage girls and guys who wear skinny jeans used those things.

I love my Samsung S7 Edge. It's been my go to phone, GPS, and camera all season through thick and thin and keeps going strong, even after a couple of full dunks in rivers. Do yourself a favor and ditch the Fruit phone, you'll appreciate it.

I have had a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for just over 3 years now. It's starting to show a few glitches/signs of wear but it's been solid up to this point. I do run quite a few apps on mine so that can effect the performance over time. Mostly I probably just need to get a new battery as it doesn't hold it's charge like it used to. My wife has a Samsung S4 still going strong that she got the same time I got my Note 3. I've never owned an Iphone for comparison but my Dad owns one and always has problems with it randomly deleting contacts, not allowing him to open random files, etc. I always assumed it was just him not knowing how to operate the phone but who knows...

If you are going to look at an Android device you should take a hard look at the Motorola Droid Turbo. My girlfriend has had the Turbo 1 and I have the 2 and neither of us have had any issues. We had quite a few problems with our Samsung phones.

I have the Samsung Galaxy S4. It has been flawless going on 2 years. One of the many benefits of the Samsung is the removable battery as well as the removable SD card. I use the micro SD cards, with the adapter, in my trail cameras. Then when checking them, I simply insert the SD card directly in my phone and look/save/delete the pictures right there on the spot.

I am going to sway from everyone above and say I love my iPhone. I have friends who have the Samsung and love it. I also have ones who hate it and have had nothing but issues. I personally don't have any issues with my iPhone but there are lemons in them all. It's more about the functionality of the device than the brand. Android is completely different than iPhone. Both have pros and cons.

I guess my experience has been positive with Apple and not-so with Samsung. Tried Samsung twice and hated it. The OS was miserable and the apps were buggy in general. I had a galaxy S-something for 3 months after I accidentally smashed my iPhone 5, and that thing would crash daily and shut down completely twice the first month.

I just got my fourth iPhone (7 Plus), and haven't had a single bad experience (except said smashing which was totally on me, of course). My iPhones have just worked. Particularly, it seems the software has been much better for me. That is just my anecdotal experience, so take it as such, but I won't be leaving Apple phones.

I love my apple laptop, 6 years zero problems. 4 years ago iPhone was unmatched but now it makes no sense for someone who needs basic smartphone capabilities. You can buy an Android for under $200 one time price no installments, no contract agreements from any cell provider. If that phone craps out after a year you still saved about $500 compared to an iPhone.

I stay with Samsung from good experience with their phones. Only reason I have a highend s7 is my phone is a phone, gps, computer, camera. That costs less than all those individually.

THANK YOU ALL ! keep the comments coming please !! I'm getting the general impression that it may be as much the new techy, bells and whistles, young crowd demands as much as the quality of a given phone
THAT said, I'm swaying ever so slightly toward an Android device - I tried one for 2 weeks last year when the last i phone took a dump and finally gave in on "learning" another system but I'm thinking it might be a "buy once cry once" sort of change for me .... not decided yet though

BTW, forgot to mention that I have a 4c that I saved for a "back-up" (thank GOD) and I've been told by a couple of "techys" that it was arguably the best i phone in the lineup, any rebuttals ?

You need a good ole fashioned flip phone . Seriously though I don't see a phone out there that I want right now. I had a LG that was junk. 2 Samsung S4 'a that had serious issues!!!! Terrible glitches! Freeze up! You name it! I switched to an iPhone 6. At first I missed Android is but soon loved iOS. No trouble for about 1.5 years. Than bam!! Won't stay connected to WiFi, battery last half a day, screen occasionally freezes and can't use phone for hours! So go with whatever makes you happy! Everyone has different experiences with each one. Both OS have things I like and things I don't!

Tomorrow Google will debut their Pixel and Pixel XL phones. I'm extremely excited. I'm an Android guy. I've had each of the Motorola moto X's and loved them and a bunch of others along the way. To date Motorola has been King. Google and HTC should have some really cool things up their sleeves for tomorrow.

I've had the Samsung Galaxy S3, S4, S5, and now I'm on the Note 5 which is my favorite so far. I prefer Samsung over iPhone. My wife has had multiple iPhones , she's on the 6 right now I think. Her phone always has more issues than my Samsungs, but she is like a lot of people and is so used to the iPhone that she is worried about learning a new operating system. IMO they're all so easy to use now, that you can learn a new system very quickly. My only complaint with Samsung is battery life. IPhone has Samsung beat there so far. The gps/maps and voice search on Samsung is much better. Also, Swype keyboards for texting is so much better. You might be able to get that on iPhone now through an app, but I'm not sure. Either way you go, I love the big size phones. Before I got the Note 5, I was worried about going to such a large phone, but after 3 days of using it I would never go back.

I second Laqua's comments. Only downside to the Google phones that have kept me from switching is that they haven't been waterproof and they haven't had SD cards and 32GB simply isn't enough for me as I have my 32GB internal and 64GB SD card maxed out right now. After suffering through just about every manufacturer (OEM) out there, I have come to the conclusion that they can all make good hardware that they proceed to screw up with terrible software. They are not software companies and should not try to be. It's the minor annoyances that will eventually get to you with a lot of Android devices, which is no fault of Android itself, but the terrible OEMs and mediocre app developers (Google isn't as picky when it comes to the store). Samsung makes really good hardware which they screw up with software that looks like it's designed for kids with 10 year old style guides. HTC customizes the software so much that they take years to come out with 1 update and that is all you will get. LG has just had bad hardware ever since the G2. I am a big fan of Sony, but their lack of presence in the US market is disappointing. Also their recent releases have been underwhelming, but I have an old Z3V (the most recent Sony for Verizon which is like 4 years old, but I have it rooted and running custom software). Motorola is the one who messes with the software least and therefore has a better end product, but ever since they were bought by Lenovo they haven't been as good about updates and stability. The best Android device that I own is a 2013 Google Nexus 7. It has gotten software updates practically on release day and still feels like a new device. I would suggest that you strongly consider the new Pixel phones (being announced tomorrow, released probably in a month), the latest Motorola phone for your carrier, or an S7. My brother and dad both run an S7 and it is plenty good enough as they don't notice the little things that would bug me.

My only complaint with Samsung is battery life. IPhone has Samsung beat there so far.

This is because of 2 things:

1) Apple is far more restrictive on their app store and they make sure your app isn't doing things to eat too much battery. I have though about writing a "Handwarmer" app that does everything bad you could possibly do to eat battery, which would generate heat. I doubt it would be allowed in the Apple store, but the Google store wouldn't have a problem with it (until it blew up someone's phone).

2) iOS still doesn't have proper multi-tasking. When an app goes to the background in iOS it can only do very limited things. Android uses a concept of garbage collection that allows some apps to do whatever they want in the background if they want. Usually the last couple apps are kept in the background for a small amount of time to allow you to seamlessly flip back and forth, but if you (as a developer) create a persistent notification you can request to stay active as long as you please with no limitations as to what you can do. This was a design choice by the Android developers that does hurt battery device, but IMO was the right decision to not limit the capabilities of the system.

I still get a full day's battery except for the case where I am in the mountains and my phone is struggling for a single bar of service.

Thank you again ALL ! the discussion has moved past my knowledge level already ! The GENERAL consensus I'm arriving at is that most all phones will or can leave a person stranded incommunicato - I'd not heard Motorola mentioned for a long time, they used to be tough as nails in the "old days" I think - So here is a revised version of my original post:

All I am asking for is a phone to call and text without going black, leaving me with no means to communicate - Although somewhat complicated, would it make sense to just pick the new system I like best for day to day that also has email and some search engine ability and then pick a bullet proof simple phone to switch to when I'm headed to the hills ? (or some kind of "system" like that ??) Please REMEMBER that I'm NOT techy at all

For the least software issues I would go with the Google phones getting released today, or the previous generation Google Nexus 5X. However if you want a lot of options for cases they aren't as popular so you won't have as many options as you would a Motorola or Samsung. The Moto Z or S7 will both work great for your use case. I have never been incommunicado unless by my own fault when screwing with the software. The other positive is that both the Google and Moto are cheaper than the S7, but my guess is that the S7 will have a slightly better camera (HTC, who is making the Google phones have never had the best camera, but good enough). The advantage to the S7 is that it is waterproof and you will have a ton of options for cases due to popularity.

The problem I've had using an older phone in the hills is that in areas of low coverage Verizon has shut down their 3G towers when replacing with LTE so my old shitty phone that only has 3G didn't work where my new phone did. Also, I use my phone as my GPS so I like to have my waterproof Sony phone with me.

The only battery life problem I have with Samsung is reading Rokslide too much.
