Husqvarna 1640

Hello All - I'm looking for a Husqvarna to send to JES for a rebore to .35 Whelen. I'm lucky enough to live in-state and not far from Simpson's Ltd. Is there a model I should focus on if I'm concerned with mounting an optic e.g. bolt throw, drilled and tapped receiver. Thanks all and have a great New Year.
Most of the 1640s were drilled and tapped from the factory, but not all of them! I have one where the rear holes were not aligned properly to the rest of the action. I couldn't tell you for sure if it came like that from the factory, or if some genius did that work afterwards -I would guess the latter. I had Farrell Industries cut a custom pic rail for it and that has worked great. As far as I know, none of the models before 1640 were ever drilled and tapped from the factory -those were all 98 and 96 Mausers.

I’ve always been hesitant of the 9.3x62 in a 1640. The extra pound or so that the Model 98 640 action carries helps tame the recoil a good bit. My 7 Mag 1640 is a handful. I’ve always lusted after one of the Norma Mags though, or a 7x57, which is uber rare in the states.
I turned down a matches set of custom stocked Huskys in 6x55 Swede and 7x57 from a family friend when I purchased his entire reloading room. I called back in the morning after kicking myself, but another buddy had come in right behind me and bought everything that I did not purchase. The ones that get away hurt the most...

You should be hesitant of it. I had one and it was just brutal to shoot. Not very well-balanced either. I don’t regret selling that one.

It's not that bad. I have a 1640 9.3x62 in a schnabel stock, and the recoil is pretty strong with the hard plastic buttplate, especially from benchrest or (I would imagine) prone. When I shoot offhand or from a sitting position off the knee or backpack, it's fine. I have a limbsaver slip on on it, and it's fine.

I've shot a 300 WinMag of comparable weight, and the 9.3 is much more docile (subjective).

I did end up getting one and shot it a grand total of once in the thin schnabel stock with iron sights. Can confirm brutality.

I ended up putting it in a Hogue Mauser 98 Hogue over mold stock that I modified and bedded to fit the 1640 action. With that and a 30mm 2-10x Trijicon Credo mounted on top, it was a wholly different rifle to shoot.
