Hi Guys,

Just booked a 10ish day trip to Norway (Bergen, specifically) with the girlfriend. Her brother just got his PhD there and is dating a Norwegian girl. I was speaking to him over the holidays and he made it seem like big game hunting was actually fairly easy to come by there. Has anyone done any hunting there that they can tell me about. Is a DIY hunt possible? Can you bring game meat back to the US? Other than moose and reindeer, I am not sure what other big game is even available over there. Anything you can tell me would be helpful. If I'm taking 10 days off that I could use for elk hunting, I better kill something while I'm there, even if it's small game, lol!

I should add that we're going in May...probably no big game seasons open but I really have no clue. Maybe small game? Or am I going to be limited to a fishing trip?

Man you are screwing yourself for the future! Taking that much time off for a trip that could’ve used on a hunting trip??? She’s gonna come up with something every year now! Haha

Yep. I'd take time off without pay for elk hunting if I had to. That way you get both trips in this year. While we were stationed in Iceland I did a ton of fishing there, also did some goose hunting. I tried to get some reindeer hunting in but the timing never seemed to work out. The outfitter even had a sweet trip to Greenland that he wanted to take me on, but again the timing was bad. Norway is similar to Iceland, but I'm sure they have different rules and regs. May is going to be tough probably, but fishing will be great then.

Hunting Norway depends on when and where you are. Coast and south has red deer, south part of the country has fallow and roe deer. Interior has moose and reindeer. I believe there are boar pretty much everywhere. Wolf, bear, lynx and wolverine are huntable there, but I don't know the details on those. Moose are Sept/Oct, and reindeer are Aug/Sept.

Main birds are capercaillie and black grouse. They also have waterfowl.

They have all sorts or rules and regs to hunt there. The hunting consortium was helpful with information when I looked into it, but the trip never happened, yet.

My daughters roommate at Stanford is from Norway. I was thinking "Sweet, I have an in" Ugh, no........no bowhunting was enough to stop me in my tracks.

Its a whole process as stated above.....you have to apply long before you go...and take a shooting proficiency test.
[something tells me if the regs were that stringent in the US...we wouldn't have so many guys in the woods- /Grin]

Heres a link with a general outline

Easy boys I still have plenty of vacation time for my elk hunt this year. All my non-hunting friends and family having fall weddings is killing my hunting time more than this trip. Thanks Beendare for the link. I've been having trouble finding a decent reliable source of info. I did read somewhere that for tourists, if you have proof you have taken a hunter's safety course in the states you don't need to take the test. I need to look more into that. Might not be able to do any big game hunting, but waterfowl or birds may be good.

I'm finding it difficult to find regs on bringing game meat back to the states as well. I do think you can bring back seafood though, so I might just try to haul in a bunch of halibut instead of toting a rifle or shotgun.

Find a guide or outfitter and go through them. Big 5 or Wild Jaeger, both are booking agencies, I’d start there. Good luck!
