Hunting for meat vs trophy

I’ll simplify your formula for you
$ spent on hunting license & tags+$ spent on fuel+$ spent on ammunition shot at game/lbs of game meat in the freezer

The gear is used over a lifetime, I enjoy shooting even if I wasn’t hunting and I get paid for my time away from work so none of those get included. I especially laugh when people say you have to include food costs for your hunting trip because I’m usually eating on venison chili(with beans) or venison stew in hunting camp and I’ve got news I eat when I’m at home or at work too

Gear is a startup cost, and much of it is swapped out and replaced, which is a recurring cost. Paid time off involves opportunity cost.

There is nothing economical about western hunting. A hunter with 100% success would save money by eating Wagyu beef instead of game.

Here's an easy way to tell if you are hunting for meat:

Take the sum of the total dollars you have spent for all of your gear and expenses involving hunting activity. Add this to your daily work wage multiplied by the number of days you have hunted. Divide this by the number of total pounds of meat you have harvested from game.

If your calculated figure is greater than about 7 or 8, you are not hunting for meat.
This:

Actually, we prefer wild elk. And you won't find anything more "free range-organic".
Three in the freezer and we feel like King & Queen of the Known Universe.

And if it has large antlers all the better!

Nothing economical about any hunting i dont drive more than 10 miles to deer hunt and dont want to know the $ per pound. Waterfowl thats makes my foray into western hunting look cheap

What is your experience hunting? Have you hunted before, are you just getting into hunting? Why did you make an account here?

More red flags than a bull fight here.....

He said in another post that he doesn’t hunt and stated “I do a lot of birding and wildlife watching.” He joined recently and this thread is one of his first posts. Seems like a lot of this going on lately.

I would argue an instate guy who is shooting elk right by his house with a mossberg patriot combo and core-loks gets upside right with the money saving pretty dang quick ( this is not your average rokslider) lots of guys like this. Traveling to hunt outside of your state is 100% not economical what so ever though

I don’t know, 32 oz of elk steak is about $100 on Amazon apparently, my bull I shot in Nevada probably yielded about 250 lbs of meat. If we are conservative and say I got 100 lbs of steak/roast cuts that’s still $5000 worth of meat. Add in the ground meat and I’m sure I am still coming out way ahead

Whatever you have to tell yourself/wife at the end of the day. Haha I should show mine these stats so she can be so proud that I saved all this money 💰

I don't know if I'm ahead from hunting, but I haven't bought meat in 8 years. Its a good feeling to completely avoid the most expensive section of the grocery store.
