What advantage does this have when carrying a pack?

I can answer on a day pack situation (although I don't have mine yet, so it's theory) but when I cross carry, my rifle slides down over my day pack and gets tighter throughout the day, so when I need it, it's hard to pull up and over my head because it's snagged. Hoping the extra inches once the buckles is loosened will make it easier.
