Hunter shoots charging grizzly in Montana

What happens to the meat and hide when a grizzly is shot in defense of life? Asking for a friend.

In Alaska, when I had to shoot a charging grizzly bear while standing on my back porch from 4'.
After I brought the bear to the Fish n Game office and filled out the paperwork. A biologist asked me if I skinned it first. I said no. And was told that I needed to, I told them that if I was going to haul it all the way home and skin it I wasn't coming back. He asked that I drive around the back of the building. There we unloaded it on to a pick nik table and he pulled out a tooth and took some hair samples. Then we threw it into the dumpster where 2 other bears were already.
The hide wasn't in very good condition hair wise with thin spots of hair and kinda smelly.
Too bad, I would have brought it home and skinned n tanned it for a memory. And would have tried to save the meat if possible. Make some sausages n such

Wondered about that myself, in Idaho. I could not find any policies, and none of the reported stories mention it, to my recollection.
If I understand the law correctly, it is illegal to possess any parts of a grizzly that is obtained in Idaho.

I think you are right. Shooting perfectly justified, but not taking part or whole of the grizzly into possession. I found this policy that seems to address the issue:

Interestingly, looks like the director has considerable leeway in determining the fate of meat and hide. Could even be auctioned. My guess is that the meat would go to a zoo.

I guess Lewis and Clark, Teddy Roosevelt and others did too, since they wrote about it— A lot. Maybe because a big bear charging you is absolutely the worst thing that could probably happen to you hunting the west (what Rokslide is based on).

Eastcoasters venturing west and getting overly excited about bears is my point exactly. Thanks for the assist.

What I’m saying is, I think there’s an inverse relationship between the amount of time a person spends around bears and the amount of time person spends obsessively worrying about bears.

There are terms for this; “bearanoia” and “bearafied” come to mind.

As much as I’d love to continue this witty repartee, there are about 3,000 “Which 10mm for bear defense?” threads that I need to go get caught up on. TTFN.

In Alaska typically what happens is the carcass is left in the field and the hide, head, and feet are surrendered to fish and game. The tanned hide usually goes up for auction at the Fur Rondy winter festival that takes place in late Feb. every year in Anchorage.
