I'm blown away by all the folks here who cannot wrap their minds around the expansion of the West. It has been going on for years and its only going to get worse. People move, grow and expand...like any animal population. If you want to live with less people move somewhere undesirable.
Everyone knows how great living in the Western US is and now here they come.

As someone moving to Idaho this coming spring/summer, I completely understand the concerns of the locals with the influx of other people from other states coming. On the negative side you have to deal with a lot of unwanted new things such as liberal policies that are brought along with those people but on the (hopefully) positive side you have genuinely good people coming there from other areas as well. I’d like to think I’m in the latter group coming from a smaller area in the Midwest. Just keep in mind no matter if you’re a current resident or someone moving in- you have to take the good and the bad, but hopefully the good far outnumber the bad and they make the place even better than it originally was.

Whenever I see warnings like this it makes me wonder if it’s all relative. I’m leaving inNune for a 2 month road trip through the west. At the end my wife and I will choose a place that best fits our needs and plant some roots. Coming from CT I feel that even the most crowded city in ID will feel like an improvement.

I also hear that the influx of people are making real estate unaffordable. That is also relative. Where I’m moving from a 20 year old 3 bedroom house will cost you 400k and the state will charge you another 8-10k per year for the pleasure of owning it.

OP, gl with your move and maybe I’ll see you out there in June/July lol

Thanks, and gl on your search as well!

Well if what has happened in the past and is currently happening in Colorado over the years with hunting seasons being shut down and a huge influx of anti hunters, many from California, is any indication of what is going to happen in the other western states I say a hint of xenophobia is warranted. Born and raised in Montana and the fact that last year we had to defend trapping and fight against I-177 definitely scares the crap out of me and is a clear indication that times are changing. I also feel that when someone lives their whole life in an area and grows up with a small town feeling then has to start dealing with a large influx of people in a relatively short time period that start causing things to be different then they previously were for said person also warrants some since of xenophobia.

Nothing against out of staters moving in, but if your going to another state I feel you should have to assimilate with the locals and how they’ve been living for a long time, and some people do, but with the recent grizz ban in BC, the bear and lion bans in many western states and an overall negative view towards hunting starting to get more prevelant and present in the Rocky Mountain states I am starting to turn into a xenophobe more and more with each passing year...

I can sympathize with that. I'm from a small town with less than 2000 people, obviously a hunter but also a trapper mostly muskrats, mink and coons. I understand why people are a little wary of out of staters but I'm not out to change wherever we move to suit my needs or wants over those who have been there before. My wife and I were looking at Colorado since we have family there but are leaning against it for the reasons you listed.

Wanted to give everyone that commented on my post an update. Again thanks for all the input, I appreciate it guys. After 5183 miles in the car and 93 hours of driving through colorado and Idaho looks like the wife and I are looking to move to Coeur d Alene in about a year. Loved the area up there and enjoyed a lot of conversations with some friendly Idahoans. Anyways thanks again guys.

Idaho natives are the nicest people you'll ever meet. I moved here from Indiana 4 years ago to get away from the workaholic attitudes and for lack of a better term, no fun attitudes that abound there. My goal is to have people think that I was born here and I've had multiple times where people have assumed that I was indeed. That's my goal and it makes me happy when it happens.

The culture of Idaho is special and honestly even in 4 years down here in Boise, you can feel it shifting in peoples' driving and things. So ironic when people (calis) move here because of Idaho's unique qualities but then have to make sure they have their new outdoor malls and fountains and chain restaurants complete with right turn only exits....exactly like where they came from. So, when you move support the local Idaho businesses and restaurants so that the Idaho we all love can continue :) Good luck on your move!
