How’s your fuel prices

The states in the SW that use 85 instead of 87 have always thrown me for a loop. It always makes me wonder if 85 is ok because that isn't even an option lots of places. Always wondered why dont they baseline on 87 like most of the country.
I don’t know.

All I know is Toyota says to run 87 or higher and the cost to run the higher is pretty low so that’s what I do. The extra costs for me over a year isn’t much more than one diagnostic fee from a mechanic so if it keeps me away from them, it’s worth it.

It’s call “Flex Fuel” around here. My 21 F150 is a Flex Fuel model. Meaning it can run it if you choose. But mileage is so crappy you’re better off running 87+ octane.

Completely different thing far as I know. E85 "flex fuel" in MN is 85% ethanol but actually has an octane rating of 100+ typically. I'm pretty sure the 85 octane stuff in UT, NM, etc is 85 octane with typical 10 or 15% max ethanol content, like our standard 87 is in MN.

The gas stations i'm talking about dont have standard 87 octane usually, its 85 (not e85) or "special" 89 and "premium" 91+ for standard gas. Cars for "Flex Fuel" aren't designed around a lower octane rating far as I know bur rather to function appropriately with primarily ethanol based fuel.

I don’t think I have ever seen 15% eth in Utah. It’s all 85 octane 10% eth. You might be able to find 15% but you would have to look.

Edit to add. You are correct. We generally have 85,87,91 and diesel on pumps. Sometimes the pump will have non ethanol.

Hmm. Thanks! Either way, I’ve never tried it because of the reduced mileage factor.

All the Kum-n-go gas stations here in Colorado that Maverik bought have E15 as a cheap option. I think they call it ECO. I personally avoid it. Maverik also added E15 at their other stations here. I still buy their ethanol free there for my other engines; SXS, generator, chainsaw, etc. I stopped buying any other gas from them in protest to their E15.

The gas price games have been going on for a while here. Even when gas was cheap a year ago.
Three Circle K's, Two Maverik's and a 7eleven in my neighborhood would all raise their prices $0.50 every week and slowly drop it back down, only to repeat.
All six stations would raise the price to the same amount on the same day each week.

I know we did a round of these Upside links a couple of years back. This will get you a discount a participating gas stations. I’ve earned about $250 or so in cash back over the last 2-3 years. I also then use it on top of the gas station loyalty programs which usually gets me an additional 5 cents or so off per gallon.

Here’s my referral code for Upside app which will get you some initial benefits when you sign up:
