My Tacoma says to run 87. Costco only sells 85 and 91 here. 91 at Costco is generally cheaper than 87 at Chevron.
My taco and gx550 live on it. Gx requires it and the taco makes more power and more mpg on it. The price difference is worth it to me. In the grand scheme of things gas is cheap imo.
I've always heard that 85 at altitude works the same as 87 near sea level.
Honestly, couldn’t tell you. Just know that it says to run 87 or higher. Currently, it’s about 40 cents more a gallon for 91 over 85. 21 gallon tank, 8.5 bucks a tank and I don’t have to find out.
Our premium here is all non ethanol and is 30 cents more. I use it in the mower but everything else runs what’s ever cheapest.

Have you put it on a dyno to really know if it makes more power or is it just a feeling. The mpg I got in my tundra didn’t make enough of a difference to make premium worth it.
I have only used 85 in both Tacoma's I've owned for the past 20+ years.
It does that’s why it’s sold at higher elevations
Same here. Tracked it intensively for about a year. No discernible difference in my Tacoma.
I believe this is correct, we don't even have 85 down here it starts at 87.
I believe higher Octane fuel requires hotter ignition to burn, it's designed to combat predetonation in higher compression engines. The higher the compression the higher Octane is needed. Low grade has always performed better in all my gas vehicles, even the Hemi which I was supposed to use higher octane because of the compression got better gas mileage with low grade. I'm betting the average truck doesn't need it.
