My app strategy includes:

- Arizona (elk, deer and pronghorn)
- Colorado (elk, deer and pronghorn)
- Iowa (whitetail)
- Kentucky (elk lottery)
- Montana (elk and deer bonus points at the moment)
- New Mexico (elk lottery)
- Utah (elk and deer)
- Wyoming (elk, deer and pronghorn)

Michigan. New Hampshire. Maine. Kentucky. Utah. Colorado. Nevada. Montana. Wyoming. Arizona. New Mexico.

Sometimes Alaska.

Out of all of these I want an Elk tag in my home state of Michigan. I have points since the inception of the program and might not ever draw that tag…
Do any go in the random or is only points? Just got back from MI. Boy was that cold!

Just AK, and WY cow tags. I buy a point for Elk in case I want to go hunt a general someday, though I’m only at 3 points so who knows. Haven’t drawn a cow tag since I moved away. Odds have worsened a bunch on those the last 5-6 years, at least for the units I put in for.

Application season is upon us. How many states you guys submitting apps in?

Personally, I’m in for three MT, AZ, NM
This year just NM and MT. Waiting to build more points in certain PP states. If I am fortunate enough to draw it would be my first elk hunt. I am well versed in hunting moose, elk will be a new challenge.

Elk:
Colorado
Wyoming
Arizona

I'll get a tag or two in Colorado and probably just points in AZ and Wyoming. I may still apply for a cow tag in Wyoming.

Since we're adding non-elk states...

Deer:
Iowa
South Dakota
Kansas
Wyoming
Colorado

There's a good chance of a Colorado deer tag, the rest are just points.

Pronghorn: points only
Colorado and Wyoming

Moose, goat, sheep:
Colorado only

Also applied in Alaska.

I also buy some random raffle tickets along the way.

Good thing the lady doesn't disapprove of all this...

Eventually AK, and WA or OR
save yourself some time and money and cross off WA ... we are losing tags almost on a yearly basis and the apps climb! odds are so bad anymore

1. my home state. I’ve been fortunate to take a pile of elk (definitely not all trophy bulls) as well as red deer/stag. by far the greatest number of hours spent hunting, thus far, have been spent in the Cervus elaphus (elaphus) woods and mountains. so my priorities are different these days. I’ll always put one of either sex in the freezer each year, but it’s liberating to not give too much of a rip about pursuing elk tags.

besides, my house is small. what am I gonna do with all them cumbersome racks? ;)

(only partly kidding. I’m going to hunt an Alaskan-Yukon moose one of these days, but I literally do not have room for that trophy. I ponder this not infrequently.)
