How Many Rounds?

Cole tac makes a 40 ct wallet. So I fill one of those. In the field I have 3 in the mag, 2 on the rifle and 3 more in my bino harness.

13 in the field (3 in magazine, 10 in ammo wallet). 20 at the truck. Hopefully I'm only bring 1 less back.

Out of state or country , things happen. I see a need to bring 50 reloads on a trip. Gun falls, scope craps just name a few. If you have to repair or replace something always nice to have enough to re sight in . I see no need to carry a bunch of you shoot over the counter ammo and there are stores near by but if your 50 miles in.kind of hard to drive to the store.

Truth here. I had a Wyoming 2 antelope hunt back when I only shot reloads. I also had what I thought was a nice vortex PST scope riding in a padded rifle case under the back seat. Lesson learned there too. Shit happens and extra ammo is cheap insurance that provides options. So does a backup rifle but I don't often bring one. I do when the conditions call for it.

3n + 10

n = number of animals I'll be trying to take

So this accounts for worst case scenario of poor shooting on everything and 10 extras for any sight checking if needed. Have never needed even 1n + 10, but better to have and not need than...

One. I am optimistic and over confident.

If my brain would let me take one round I could create world peace, know what women want and build a colony on the moon.

I do this with kids and first timers. I only give them one round when we are sitting in the blind. Makes them think and pay attention to the shot.

Out of state. 50

Sounds like I am on the lower end for big trips. Once I had to stop shooting coyotes to make sure I had a comfortable amount of ammo on had until the hunt concluded.

3 - 5 for the mag
6 on the rifle butt
12 - 15 in the pack lid in a tight rolled and taped ziploc

Usually nothing extra in the truck unless I have second deer or elk tag or expect lots of predator/varmint opportunity

Usually bring a backup MPBR zeroed “truck gun” incase I have a catastrophic incident with 20 - 40 rounds. Never had to use it myself, but have had a buddy pack it when his scope ring cracked right before our hunt.

Man I end up blasting rocks and plinking when I see a cool rock and hunting is slow or learning new roads/access, learning the wind for an area, waiting for the rut or migration to turn on, etc…. I bring 2 rifles and commit 1 to plinking/backup locked out of sight in the truck. My primary for the trip I’ll have 10 rounds and it’ll already be attached to my pack ready to go. Backup/plinking will have 50 rounds and I won’t go below 10 plinking. Exception is prairie dogs. I’ve gone Winchester more than once on a good dog town!

Not to derail the thread but what do you guys carry your extra ammo in when in the field?

I use a plastic ammo wallet made by I think MTM. Rounds snap in place so don’t make noise. Holds 9. Two of these in the back pack plus a couple loose rounds in the bino harness.
