Not to derail the thread but what do you guys carry your extra ammo in when in the field?

I put 4 rnds in a cut down carrier from a box of factory ammo. If I'm out west, that goes in the top elastic sleeve of my bino pack. If back east, it goes in the pocket of my hand warmer muff.

Norma puts these little break away caddies that hold 5 rounds in their ammo cartons. I have saved a couple of those and stow them in a jacket or vest pocket and another in the pack.

I love those Norma ammo carriers! If only we can get them to package their unloaded brass in those things too.

You guys are carrying 10+ rounds in the backcountry in CO? WTH? Why? I'm already carrying enough crap. I don't see the logic here unless you are coyote hunting or in serious predator territory.

I carry maybe 5. Full mag is 3 and 2 "I lost my mag" rounds in the harness. I've never put more than 2 rounds into an animal in all my years, and if I miss 5 times its time to head back to camp and figure things out.

I'm not ashamed to say I've shot (at) things multiple times, happens for a variety of reasons but sometimes i just get excited. Yep even ran out of rounds a couple of times and that's a shitty feeling for sure. Now days I'd rather carry to many than not enough.

Went to Africa in 2021 took 50 rounds. 7 animals planned 13 animals taken 20 rounds fired.
Colorado 2017 20 rounds taken 2 animals planned 7 rounds fired
Colorado 2020 50 rounds take. 2 animals planned 1 round fired
West Texas 2024 40 rounds taken. 1 animal planned. 2 rounds fired
Hunting around home 6-10 rounds carried at all time.
I think 40 rounds plus applicable torx/ Allen wrenches of sizes for all screws on the rifle is just insurance for screw ups,

I know this is asking about rifle but I do more out of state bird hunting. I'll take 150ish-200 shotgun shells for main gun. Several different size shot in there. This year im taking a new gun so probably about 100 shells for that gun as well.

I carry 700. All in the cargo pockets of my pants. Makes a nice jingle as I run up the mountain.

Full magazine + 3 rounds in my bingo harness. I also carry 10 spare rounds in my pack. At least a full box in the truck. I always contemplate bringing a backup rifle but am too nervous to leave a rifle in the truck.

Jk. But find it weird a western backpack oriented site has users carrying a pound of extra lead.

Out of state or country , things happen. I see a need to bring 50 reloads on a trip. Gun falls, scope craps just name a few. If you have to repair or replace something always nice to have enough to re sight in . I see no need to carry a bunch of you shoot over the counter ammo and there are stores near by but if your 50 miles in.kind of hard to drive to the store.

You'll never truly realize the security of plenty of rounds of ammo unless you get overwhelmed by deer on a dog drive in the South and after frantically digging for another shell, cram a roll of Tums into your magazine, chamber it, and try to shoot!

There's usually an emergency round or two down the defrost vent in the dash. Thankfully I've never needed them.

I used to carry ten rounds in the field, twenty rounds left in the truck. Few years ago I got in to a group of coyotes and shot six of them at one time, using seven of my ten rounds. I spent the rest of the day hunting with my remaining three. After that experience I carry fifteen on me on the field. I’ll never shoot that many coyotes again at once. But I want to be prepared for the opportunity!
