How many Canadians pursue preference points outside of their home province?

It sounds like it's fairly commonplace south of the border to apply to draws and for preference points outside of your home state, but you don't hear of that much in Canada.

I don't know anyone that does this myself but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Do you apply for any points outside of your home province? Where and for what? Are you applying for the intent of hunting DIY or to draw and use a guide?

Canadians don't really let one another hunt without a guide in the western provinces.

Most Canadians that I know are buying pronghorn points, and elk points, and sheep points. Those that hunt the USA anyway.

Definitely a different system vs what is available in the states. We seem to be more set into our silos.

There are a few opportunities from what I can see where a non-resident can hunt big game out of province with OTC tag DIY or with a local (no guide).

In terms of the preference points I’m not aware of any draw that one can apply to from out of province and not require a guide, but I may be surprised.

I believe you can hunt whitetail but you can't hunt moose without an outfitter

I’m based in Ontario, we do have some NR exemptions for DIY.

I’m looking for anything outside of Ontario, mainly prairies and west.

In Ontario non-residents can buy OTC tags for Wolf/coyote, turkey and white tail and DIY.

Outfitters are required for a NR to hunt black bear (cheap) and Moose (not as cheap).

Moose being the only preference point game we have, doesn’t look like you can apply for points as a NR.

I just read about the Non-Resident Trophy Sheep draw in Alberta...2% odds of drawing a tag.

Doesn't look like a Guide is required, just a resident hunter to hunt with.

I like those odds.

I've hunted Alberta as a non resident alien under their hunter host system. A mate in Calgary hosted me for black bear and we had a great time.
The species available was more limited though. I couldn't get tags for things like mountain goat, sheep, moose.

Looks like then hunter host direct relative only applies to non-resident aliens.

BC also requires your host to have had a license the previous 2-3 years (depending) in order to take you. Telling your cousin who has never hunted to host you doesn’t work.

Very strict, no points that I can rember seeing.

I hunt with my wifes Opa in BC, I do all the paperwork for him as he's turning 92 this year and I expected last year to be the last but he called and asked if I wanted to come out again this year so you bet I will be going. We only hunt deer but it's about more than hunting. My wifes cousin might host me one day if I really was interested. I don't think it would be too difficult to find a host on her side of the family.

Unless somethings changed, you don’t need to be a relative to hunt host in BC. Lots of friends hunt host friends each year. Sheep are exempt from hunt host, grizzly was as well when we had a season.

From what I understand if you are a Non-Resident (Canadian) you can be hosted as a friend. If you are a Non-Resident (Alien) you have to meet one of the prescribed family relations, siblings, kids, aunts uncles etc. The reg specifically mentions no cousins for this scenario.

If the species in BC is on an LEH in the region and management unit you apply for then no permit to accompany will be approved. And none for Stone sheep, Bighorns, Mt Caribou or Bison are given for any region at this time that I know of.

Google “BC Permit to Accompany” and you will find several pages of rules with links. I’ve used it to take an alien (US) brother and nephew a few times for moose and Mt Caribou prior to caribou going all LEH.

No preference points in BC, but they do cut your odds of drawing an LEH in half if you drew the species the previous year. So resident hunting is either LEH or OTC. Some species like moose are LEH in southern and NW BC and OTC in the Northwest.

"BC LEH Synopsis" is 38 pages long and covers all the species and regions/management units. Google it for maps and details, and you can determine areas and species that are off limits to hunt with a "Permit to Accompany" (PTA) that a BC resident holds to take you hunting as a non-resident. And a PTA is only is given for one region and 3 adjoining management units within that region.

Yeah, I used to be able to hunt mule deer with a permit to accompany in the zone my wifes Opa hunts in and then they changed it and it took 2 years to get a lady on the phone who would actually admit the the "indigenous don't want non residents hunting mule deer that side of the river"

But Opa carries a mule deer tag when we go....

I feel for BC as they are bent over a barrel. Can't wait to hunt there this fall though, last year we didn't shoot anything but just spending time with my wifes grandparents is worth it as mine never lived into my adult years.
