How is Oregon Unit chamges going to effect points?

I am curious how people think the unit changes will effect point creep, and the ability to draw lower point units?

For example ODFW combined North Warner, South Warner, amd Beaty Buttes. North Warner is a 15+ point unit while Beaty Butte is a 3 point unit.

I expect this will push all the people with just a few points out of the entire area. I also expect the North Warner will get hammered and turn what was a premium hunt, into just another crappy Oregon hunt

We can all take guesses, but we won't know anything on how point creep will go until we get through a couple of years. Some of new units are going to screw things up big time. But it's what we've been dealt unfortunately.

All about the $$$.

I saw this same comment when ODFW moved away from unlimited OTC and went to controlled hunts for Deer and Elk. Non residents pay $150 more per license, $470 more per Deer tag, and $500 more per Elk tag. By going to controlled hunts with a 5% nr cap, and away from unlimited OTC, revenue goes down. The measly $10 application fee that some think is a revenue gain doesn't come anywhere close to covering lost NR license and tag fees. Add in the 8% decline in 2026 Deer tags, it clearly isn't about the $$$.

The bio admitted everybody will hunt the North end. They could have left them separate hunt units within the same herd range, with the swipe of a pen but chose not too, irresponsible in my opinion.

It will be very interesting see how it plays out. I’m guessing it’s gonna take a couple of years to really see how the points will work out. This year will be a good year to maybe get lucky on a harder tag I think but who knows.

I agree, think some people will end up getting some great hunts for “cheap”

Only time will tell. I like to hunt the East side as frequently as possible, so I normally put in for high odds low success units. I'm guessing the changes won't be significant for guys in my boat. I do realize that some guys will feel like they've been cut off at the knees by these changes. My own personal, unsubstantiated theory, is this is a step towards decreasing the amount of high count point holders and going to a completely random draw system.

Some of the new units will be destroyed. combining units and raising tag numbers will only serve to consolidate more people into premium areas that were already crowded. Points to draw will rise, I think. The only saving grace is that there are not as many deer points in the system as elk points. I don't know why they didn't subunit more of these giant units and control the tag amounts and pressure points more.

I wonder if they'll ever discuss a plan for that, any way to phase points out and just go random. The current system seems to work pretty well up to about 5 points or so, it gives you some ability to plan. There's definitely a breaking point where I'd rather it be fully random.

In the past, I have always figured the first year of a change in any state is where the best opportunity lies, but also could see it being a mad dash to dump points. Anyone have a feel on their hunting community if folks are eager to point dump in the new system or wait and see how it shakes out?

I, for one, am hoping to get out from underneath my 10 NR points, and get back into opportunity-tag range.

For what its worth I have always operated under the same assumption, Its somewhat anyone's guess until the dust settles and build up a few years of stats for people to make informed decisions that's what I am banking on anyways! I cant say sense within my small network most my buddies look at me funny when I tell them I am applying in Oregon. As an Idaho resident I was looking at Oregon before all the NR tags went to a point system as an opportunity state solely based on my proximity to some of the units particularly the NE. Personally I am looking to draw a tag for as few points and minimal annual fees as possible. Looking at oregontags.com in theory this plan will work. I really don't want to get into the point building game in Oregon. Ultimately from what I understand from the little research I have done and couple podcasts I have listened to on it, I think this is a better way to manage mule deer even though there is going to be some fallout from a points and individual hunt unit perspective.
