For those of you chasing rifle elk, how important is having a good camo pattern versus natural earth tones to you? Specifically in regards to your pack. Looking at new packs for an elk trip this year in a heavily vegetated area. The pack I want is finally back in stock in tan but can't decide if it's worth holding out/ paying the extra cash for optifade subalpine.

If you get busted by an elk because your pack isnt camo, your doing something wrong.

If you want it in camo get it in camo. If you want it in a solid get it in a solid

Camo is basically pretty useless for most hunting. If you are trying to stalk an animal and get in close (bow hunters) then it becomes pretty important. Most animals have better hearing and a sense of smell and usually you will get busted by those senses before they see you. But if you get in close then camo will help hide your mistakes.

I agree, it means little to no difference to the elk! Dress warm & according to the temps during your hunt, many times I've worn all heavier wool top to bottom, just depends.

Here's a couple photos of my Son's & I on rifle hunts a few years back!

As said, not important at all, especially in a pack.

But I will add this advice: you say heavily vegetated, rifle elk hunt, and tan color pack. I would caution you against tan as it is the same color as an elks rump. There are idiots out there that will shoot through brush if they suspect you are an elk. Just a word of caution... Go with a different solid color.

I like wearing camo clothing during archery season, but it doesn't make much difference during rifle IME. I have a solid foliage green backpack that I wear year round and haven't had any issues being seen.

Those are awesome pictures, Paul. Great memories, I'm sure. That's what it's all about.

Remind me to never hunt in Utah? Most places you have to wear a minimum amount of orange or pink during firearm seasons to help minimize the blazing idiot issue.

The reason I never buy a camo pack is because I'm scared of not being able to find it if I set it down. Earth tones make it hard enough. I prefer the browns.

Oh I can assure you there will be enough blaze orange on it when moving around NASA could find it.
