How bad is this gunsmithing?

I was quoted $170 to thread a barrel a couple days ago. Not cut and thread, just thread. Shop comes highly recommended. I balked at that price, but based on stuff like this I'd come out ahead just having done right one time at nearly any cost.

That picture of the threads gives me anxiety. I chewed off fingernails just looking at it.

Please go back to them and give them a chance to own up and make it right. And if they don’t, please make their company name public so the next fella doesn’t make the same mistake. Hopefully the former happens.

If "I can do it cheaper" was a meme...

Unfortunately, this wasn't a cheap screw up, so I wouldn't rely on expensive being good. There was even an upcharge since it was stainless, so he k new it was harder going into it

My fingers cringe thinking about all the metal flakes that would impale them touching those threads! Thought when I opened the thread that it would show scuffing on the barrel from the jaws of the lathe, nope! I would be demanding a new barrel in hand to take somewhere else and my money back.

I'm sorry you had to experience that. I hope you haven't shot it yet. If the threads look that bad, did he even indicate it so that there isn't any runout? Suspect all the way around. Not worth damaging a supressor by FAFO.

Yeah, stainless is such a chore ;)

Meanwhile yesterday in Wyoming...

What a joker. Dox him so Sliders can avoid a similar fate.

I think "gunsmithing" is a strong word for this. Saying the threads on my PVA prefit looked different from this would be the understatement of the century.

This is a good example of every gunsmith not being the same, even successful gunsmiths might cut more corners than they should when they think nobody will notice. How many barrels are floating around with threads this bad or worse? Threads are easy to see, but what about chambers - how many premium top shelf barrels in the latest “super accurate modern” cartridge are sloppily chambered with cheap dull reamers, or worse, multiple reamers hodgepodged together to have roughly the right body with one reamer, necked with another and finally throated with a third that’s not quite right, but nobody will notice.

I grew up being the obnoxiously curious kid and young adult hanging out making small talk and watching different small town gunsmiths, so I love these guys, but they all have different strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately like humans in general, even good ones can eventually go soft in the brain, hit the bottle, go nuts with kid or female problems, go broke, get sick, or be in their own world when ears and/or ears just don’t work anymore. Like people in all stages of careers or career changing, some are just done and going through the motions until the next thing comes along, but are already checked out.

Does it work? After some of the hack job stock work photos some of you guys put up with your dead cats and shitty bedding I am shocked at the outrage over threads that are equally poor craftsmanship.
