Finally. Another of my hair-brain ideas is complete, and I figured what better place to show it off than rokslide! In preparation for my upcoming mule deer hunt, I had borrowed a tent from a friend. A 6.25lb 2p tent.. well that just wasn’t going to cut it for me, as I’m 140 pounds soaking wet and just ain’t no way I was adding that much to my pack, as I’d likely fall over backwards. This began the research for a new tent, which let me to hiking pole tents, which led me to sticker shock. $300+ for a few pieces of material?? I can sew, and heck, they list the material used right there in the description!
So it began. The planning(I will admit, I had a plan put together but then came across a YouTube series where a fellow had already done this, and I figured better to follow his instructions than risk mine not working out). I ordered my materials and set off on my journey. And let me tell you. It was a journey. I didn’t really track time, but let’s say I now know why they charge that price for a tent. However, I’m one of those weirdos who finds odd satisfaction in saying i made it myself instead of hitting “buy now”, and so, I’m happy with my decision.
All in all it’s fairly straight forward. I saved probably 150-200 bucks, and learned a thing or two along the way. All my fabric is from ripstopbytheroll, zippers are overkill and from Amazon but it was had to find an 8’ long zipper. If I did it again I’d try something different and probably knock a few more ounces off. Pegs are from Amazon, all rope is USA made 550 paracord in a “don’t trip on me” color.
The tent itself weighs in at 2lb 3.8oz in its carry bag.
With 12 stakes and the rope it comes in at 2lb 15.4 oz. I’m not counting hiking poles as I’ll be taking them either way so doesn’t really apply.
